Chapter 14 - The Doctor Who Chose the Dessert

Samuel Trent had diagnosed Lily’s hazelnut allergy when she was four.
He had prescribed every injector Daniel carried.
He had written the emergency care plan used by her school.
He was also the person Victoria asked to review the anniversary dinner menu.
Daniel now understood how the dessert contamination had been planned so precisely.
“You told the kitchen what amount could trigger a reaction without killing her immediately,” Daniel said.
Trent’s expression remained calm.
“Victoria wanted a medical crisis, not a death.”
“She took both injectors.”
“That was not part of my instruction.”
“You expect me to believe you care?”
“I care about outcomes.”
Rachel held the music box beneath her coat.
Trent aimed at her.
“Put it on the floor.”
Lily began to cry silently.
Daniel kept his body between her and the gun.
“What happens after you take it?”
“I leave.”
“And us?”
“That depends on whether you cooperate.”
Gunfire continued in the distant hallway.
The elevator doors began to close.
Trent pressed the open button.
“Now.”
Rachel slowly removed the music box.
Then she threw it past him into the elevator.
Trent turned instinctively.
Daniel attacked.
They struck the wall.
The gun fired into the ceiling.
Rachel pulled Lily’s wheelchair backward.
Trent drove his elbow into Daniel’s ribs and reached for the weapon.
Daniel kicked it into the elevator.
The doors closed.
The gun disappeared to another floor.
Trent punched Daniel and ran toward Rachel.
Before he reached her, Detective Quinn entered the corridor.
“Stop.”
Trent turned.
Quinn fired into his leg.
He collapsed.
Hospital security secured him.
The fire was contained twenty minutes later.
Two Wardens were arrested.
Three escaped through a loading area.
The music box was recovered from the elevator.
Its hidden drive remained intact.
Under police guard, investigators opened the first section of Emily’s Black Ledger.
The drive contained recordings.
In one, Victoria discussed payments to a judge.
In another, Marcus authorized surveillance on Emily.
A third recording captured Samuel Trent explaining how certain medications could imitate natural illness.
The files were enough to charge Victoria with conspiracy, attempted child endangerment, evidence tampering, and multiple financial crimes.
Marcus faced charges related to Emily’s death, attempted murder, and criminal enterprise activity.
Evan accepted responsibility for his role and agreed to testify.
The guardianship petition was withdrawn.
Daniel remained Lily’s sole legal guardian.
For the first time since the anniversary dinner, Daniel felt that the immediate danger had begun to recede.
But the first drive did not identify the Regent.
It only contained references.
R approved the transfer.
R ordered silence.
R wants the child watched.
After leaving the hospital, Lily and Daniel moved temporarily into a secured residence.
Rachel came with them under protective supervision.
Lily recovered quickly, though nightmares woke her several times each night.
Daniel stayed beside her until she slept again.
One evening, she asked, “Is Grandma going to prison?”
“Yes.”
“Forever?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did she hate Mom?”
Daniel thought carefully.
“I think she hated losing control of her.”
“Did she hate me?”
“No.”
“But she hurt me.”
“Sometimes people convince themselves that wanting something gives them permission to hurt others.”
Lily looked at the ceiling.
“I don’t want the big house.”
“What big house?”
“Grandma said it would be mine when I turned nine.”
Daniel held her hand.
“You do not have to decide anything now.”
“Can we give it away?”
“Maybe.”
“To children who need medicine?”
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
“I think your mom would like that.”
The next morning, Detective Quinn brought news.
Victoria had requested a private meeting with Daniel.
She claimed she would reveal the Regent’s identity in exchange for protection.
Daniel agreed to see her.
Victoria sat behind reinforced glass in the detention center.
Without makeup or expensive clothing, she looked smaller.
But her eyes remained sharp.
“You found Emily’s first drive,” she said.
Daniel did not answer.
“The recordings will destroy many people.”
“They deserve it.”
“You still believe this is about justice.”
“It is.”
“No. It is about succession.”
“What do you want?”
“To keep Lily alive.”
Daniel leaned closer.
“You nearly killed her.”
“I created a controlled event.”
“You stole her medicine.”
“I did not take the injector from your jacket.”
Daniel froze.
He had assumed Victoria removed both.
“The injector in Lily’s backpack was replaced by me,” Victoria said. “The one from your coat was taken by someone else.”
“Who?”
“The Regent.”
“Who is the Regent?”
Victoria looked toward the security camera.
“I will not say the name here.”
“Then we are done.”
Daniel stood.
Victoria placed one hand against the glass.
“Emily trusted Rachel.”
He stopped.
“I know.”
“She also trusted Mara Quinn.”
Daniel turned slowly.
“Emily never met Detective Quinn.”
May you like
Victoria smiled.
“That is what Mara told you?”
