THE WOMAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - The Detective Heard Everything

Eight-year-old Lily Bennett lay motionless beneath the thin white blanket, an oxygen tube resting beneath her nose and a heart monitor recording every fragile beat.

The emergency room was unusually quiet.

Too quiet.

Daniel Bennett stood in the doorway, still wearing the rain-soaked jacket he had thrown on when the hospital called. His hands trembled at his sides as he watched his mother-in-law lean over his daughter’s bed.

Victoria Hale’s expensive cream coat looked almost obscene against the pale hospital walls. Her silver hair was perfectly arranged, her lipstick untouched, and her posture remained elegant even though her granddaughter had nearly died less than two hours earlier.

Victoria believed she was alone with Lily.

She lowered her face until her mouth was only inches from the child’s ear.

“Tell everyone your father forgot your medicine,” she whispered. “That is the only story you remember.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

For a moment, he wondered if he had heard her correctly.

“What are you saying to her?”

Victoria spun around.

Her eyes widened, but only for a fraction of a second. Then the familiar mask returned.

“Daniel,” she said softly. “You frightened me.”

Lily’s fingers tightened around the edge of her blanket.

Victoria reached toward her, but Lily pulled away.

The small movement made Daniel’s stomach twist.

“Dad,” Lily whispered.

Daniel crossed the room immediately and took her hand.

“I’m here, sweetheart.”

Lily looked past him at her grandmother.

For the first time since arriving at the hospital, fear disappeared from her expression.

In its place was something Daniel had never expected to see in the eyes of an eight-year-old child.

Certainty.

“I saw you switch the dessert,” Lily said.

Victoria’s smile vanished.

Daniel slowly turned toward her.

“What dessert?”

Victoria opened her mouth, but no sound came out.

The privacy curtain behind Lily’s bed shifted.

A tall woman in a charcoal suit stepped into view. Her dark hair was pulled into a low ponytail, and a silver detective’s badge hung from her belt.

A uniformed police officer followed her.

“We heard every single word,” the detective said.

Victoria staggered backward.

“You were listening?”

“We were recording,” the detective replied.

The officer placed a sealed evidence bag on the bedside table.

Inside it was a small purple emergency injector.

Lily’s emergency injector.

The one Daniel had spent nearly twenty desperate minutes searching for while his daughter struggled to breathe on the dining room floor.

Daniel stared at the bag.

“Where did you find it?”

The officer did not look at Victoria.

“In a locked drawer inside Mrs. Hale’s dressing room.”

Daniel felt the floor tilt beneath him.

Victoria lifted her chin.

“This is ridiculous. I have no idea how it got there.”

Detective Mara Quinn studied her calmly.

“You can explain that downtown.”

Daniel looked from the injector to his daughter.

Lily’s eyes were filling with tears now.

“She took it, Dad,” Lily whispered. “Before dinner.”

Victoria pointed at her.

“She is confused. She was unconscious when the paramedics arrived.”

“I wasn’t confused,” Lily said.

The monitor beside her began beeping faster.

Daniel squeezed her hand.

“That’s enough. She needs to rest.”

Detective Quinn nodded to the officer, who stepped toward Victoria.

But before he could touch her, the emergency room door burst open.

Daniel’s younger brother, Evan, rushed inside.

His face was pale, and his tie hung loose around his neck.

“What is happening?”

Victoria looked at him as though he had come to save her.

“Evan, tell them this is a misunderstanding.”

The detective removed a folded document from a leather folder.

“Mr. Bennett,” she said to Daniel, “there’s something else you need to see.”

She handed it to him.

The first page contained Lily’s full legal name.

The second contained Daniel’s.

The third contained a signature Daniel recognized immediately.

His brother’s signature.

Daniel’s eyes moved across the document twice before the words made sense.

Temporary guardianship petition.

Emergency removal due to parental negligence.

Petitioner: Evan Bennett.

Daniel looked up slowly.

“My own brother signed custody papers?”

Evan stopped several feet away.

His eyes moved from Daniel to Victoria, then to the evidence bag.

“Daniel, I can explain.”

“Explain why you were trying to take my daughter?”

“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.”

The room became silent except for the heart monitor.

Detective Quinn turned toward Evan.

“Then tell us how it was supposed to happen.”

Evan stared at Victoria.

Victoria stared back.

And Daniel suddenly understood something more terrifying than the document in his hands.

His brother had not come to rescue Victoria.

He had come because he was afraid she might expose him.

Before Evan could answer, Lily tugged weakly on Daniel’s sleeve.

“Dad?”

He leaned closer.

“What is it?”

Lily glanced at her grandmother.

May you like

Then she whispered six words that changed the investigation completely.

“Uncle Evan gave her the key.”
