Chapter 4: The House Without Her

Nathan drove Lily back to the Ashford mansion.

Bianca and Serena followed in their own car, unwilling to let the key out of their sight.

The mansion stood behind black iron gates and tall oak trees. Lily had lived there for most of her life, but without Margaret, it looked empty.

The windows seemed darker.

The garden seemed colder.

The house no longer felt like a home waiting for someone to return.

When they entered, Lily saw Margaret’s shawl still resting over the armchair. A half-read book lay open beside the window. A vase of white roses Lily had arranged days earlier had begun to wilt.

Lily nearly broke down.

But she remembered Margaret’s final words.

Only you.

The west room was at the end of the second-floor hallway. Lily had passed it countless times as a child, but Margaret had always kept it locked.

Bianca stood behind her.

“If there is money inside, you have no right to hide it.”

Lily did not turn around.

“If Mom wanted you inside, she would have given you the key.”

Serena crossed her arms. “You are enjoying this, aren’t you?”

Lily’s hand shook as she raised the key.

“No,” she said softly. “I would give up everything if she could come back.”

For once, Serena said nothing.

Lily placed the key into the lock.

Click.

The door opened.

A faint scent of dust, lavender, and old paper filled the hallway.

Inside was not treasure.

Not gold.

Not jewelry.

The room was warm with afternoon light. In the center stood a wooden table. On it were three things: a sealed letter, a small video recorder, and a carved wooden box.

The letter had Lily’s name on it.

She opened it with trembling fingers.

My dearest Lily,

If you are reading this, then I have already left you. I am sorry for leaving you with a storm I should have calmed long ago. But there are truths in this room that must finally breathe.

You thought I saved you when I adopted you. The truth is, you saved me. You taught me what love looks like when it asks for nothing.

Open the box. Then play the video.

And remember this: kindness is precious, but it must never be used as a chain around your neck.

With all my love,
Mom.

Lily pressed the letter to her chest and cried.

Outside the room, Bianca grew impatient.

“What does it say?”

Lily wiped her tears.

May you like

“It says the truth is inside.”

Then she opened the box.
