Chapter 2: The Daughter From Nowhere

Sixteen years earlier, Lily had been a quiet nine-year-old girl at a children’s shelter.

She did not run toward visitors like the younger children did. She did not smile easily. She spent most of her time beside the window, holding a torn storybook and watching the clouds.

Families came and went. They chose babies. They chose bright, cheerful children. No one chose the silent girl who seemed afraid to hope.

Until Margaret Ashford arrived.

She was elegant, with silver earrings, soft gloves, and a voice that never rushed. While the other children gathered around her, Lily stayed near the window.

Margaret walked over and sat beside her.

“What are you looking at?” she asked.

“The sky,” Lily said.

“Why?”

“Because it keeps moving. Even when people leave.”

Margaret did not pity her. She only looked at her gently and said, “Then maybe you need someone who stays.”

One week later, Margaret came back.

And Lily went home with her.

The Ashford mansion was beautiful, but cold. Bianca and Serena hated Lily from the beginning. To them, she was an outsider brought into a house that should have belonged only to them.

Bianca once told her, “Don’t get comfortable. You are not one of us.”

Serena threw away Lily’s first birthday card from Margaret and said, “Mom feels sorry for you. That’s all.”

Lily cried that night, but Margaret found the card in the trash, cleaned it, and placed it in a frame.

Then she sat beside Lily’s bed and said, “Family is not only blood. Sometimes, family is the person who refuses to let your heart feel homeless.”

Lily never forgot those words.

Years passed.

Bianca and Serena moved out, but they returned whenever they needed money. They rarely asked Margaret about her health. They asked about documents, accounts, signatures, and property.

Lily stayed.

She studied hard, worked part-time, cooked for Margaret, took her to the hospital, and sat with her through long nights of pain.

One night, Margaret woke to find Lily asleep beside her bed, still holding her hand.

“Do you ever regret staying with me?” Margaret asked.

Lily opened her tired eyes.

“Never.”

Margaret turned her face away, but Lily saw the tears.

That same night, Margaret called her attorney.

She began preparing her final will.
