Chapter 1: The Key No One Expected

The hospital room became painfully quiet the moment Margaret Ashford took her last breath.
Lily sat beside the bed, holding the hand of the woman who had raised her for sixteen years. Margaret was not her birth mother, but she had been the only person who ever made Lily feel chosen.
In Lily’s palm lay an old silver key.
Margaret had pressed it into her hand only minutes before she passed away. Her voice had been weak, but her eyes were clear.
“Only you,” she whispered. “Open the west room. No one else.”
Then she was gone.
Before Lily could even cry properly, Margaret’s phone lit up on the bedside table. A scheduled message appeared on the screen.
Do not let them open that room.
Lily froze.
Across the room stood Margaret’s two biological daughters, Bianca and Serena. Neither of them was crying. Their eyes were fixed on the key.
Bianca stepped forward first.
“Give it to me.”
Lily pulled the key against her chest.
“No.”
Serena laughed coldly. “You really think you belong here? You were adopted. That key belongs to our family.”
Lily’s voice trembled, but she did not lower her head.
“Mom gave it to me.”
Bianca’s face hardened. “She was sick. She didn’t know what she was doing. You must have manipulated her.”
At that moment, a man appeared at the door.
Nathan Reed, Margaret’s private attorney, entered the room carrying a black leather briefcase.
“No,” he said calmly. “Mrs. Ashford knew exactly what she was doing.”
Bianca turned pale.
Nathan looked at Lily.
“Miss Lily, your mother instructed me to take you home immediately.”
Serena scoffed. “Home? You mean our house?”
Nathan opened his briefcase and took out a sealed envelope.
“Not anymore.”
The room fell silent again.

This time, it was not because of death.
It was because Margaret Ashford’s final will had begun.
