Chapter 8 - The Case Behind the Case
After Daniel and Evelyn were arrested, Officer Reyes ordered guards outside Claire’s room.
The searches uncovered more than Claire expected.
At Dr. Wells’s clinic, investigators discovered payments from Northstar and dozens of similar reports involving wealthy patients whose families later gained control of their finances.
Claire had not been the first victim.
Martin Vale attempted to leave the country from a private terminal. He was arrested with two encrypted drives and a passport under another name.
The automatic email Claire scheduled was released at eight o’clock because she was still unconscious and could not cancel it.
By nine, every board member had the documents.
By ten, three directors resigned.
By noon, Hartwell Technologies announced that Daniel’s authority had been revoked and all Northstar transactions were frozen.
Claire learned this from Priya when she woke.
“The company is safe,” Priya said.
Claire stared at the ceiling.
“The employees?”
“Payroll is secure. Operations are continuing. Gerald Knox called an emergency vote.”
“And Martin?”
“Arrested.”
Lena sat beside the bed.
“What you are feeling may take time,” she said.
“I should have seen it earlier.”
“You trusted your husband. Trust is not a crime.”
Officer Reyes entered with a folder.
“There is something else,” he said.
The forged medical reports had been used not only to remove Claire from the company. Daniel had also altered her father’s original patent documents, placing ownership rights into a trust Evelyn controlled. If the transfer had succeeded, they could have claimed the company’s core technology belonged to the Hart family, not Claire.
“My father’s name was Hartwell,” Claire said. “Daniel shortened his name to Hart after we married because he said it sounded stronger.”
Reyes nodded.
“He was preparing to argue that the public confused the two families and that his mother’s trust held the original rights.”
Claire finally understood Daniel’s obsession with becoming part of the company’s legacy. He did not want to share her success. He wanted to rewrite history until she vanished from it.
“He tried to erase me,” she said.
Priya took her hand.
“He failed.”
But failure was not yet justice. Daniel had excellent lawyers, hidden money, and years of prepared lies. The arrests were only the beginning.
