Chapter 7 - The Final Incident

The house lights came on one room at a time.

Daniel stood beside the fireplace. Evelyn sat at the dining table with a stack of documents and a glass of tea.

“You are late,” Daniel said.

“I went for a walk.”

“Without your phone?”

Claire touched her empty pocket. Daniel held up the device.

“You left it in the bedroom,” he said. “You have been forgetful again.”

Claire understood.

He had taken the phone to reinforce the story he planned to tell.

Evelyn pushed the documents forward.

“Sign these. They will allow Daniel to protect the company permanently.”

Claire sat down.

The first document transferred voting control. The second created a medical trust managed by Daniel. The third authorized the sale of Hartwell’s patents to Northstar.

“You prepared everything,” Claire said.

Daniel poured tea into a cup.

“Drink. You look tense.”

“No.”

The warmth disappeared from his face.

Evelyn’s voice became sharp.

“Stop making this difficult.”

Claire looked at Daniel.

“The wine was tested.”

Silence.

“The hospital report was traced to your contractor,” she continued. “Naomi found Northstar. Priya found the files.”

Daniel did not deny it.

Instead, he smiled.

It was the first honest expression Claire had seen from him in months.

“You always needed to prove you were the smartest person in the room,” he said. “That is why people will believe you finally broke.”

Evelyn gathered the papers.

“We should have done this sooner.”

Claire’s pulse hammered beneath the recorder.

“You drugged me,” she said.

“We helped you rest,” Evelyn replied.

“You forged medical reports.”

Daniel moved closer.

“Reports are just stories with signatures. Your mistake was thinking truth matters more than the person controlling the story.”

Claire stood.

Daniel blocked her path.

“Sit down.”

She tried to move around him. The confrontation that followed was brief, chaotic, and frightening. Claire struck the edge of a table as she pulled away. Daniel shouted at Evelyn to keep the papers. Evelyn yelled that they could still make the incident look like an attack.

Then Daniel said the words the recorder would later play in the hospital.

“Not the face this time. The board meeting is tomorrow.”

A crash sounded from the hallway.

Daniel turned.

Claire ran for the front door, but Evelyn grabbed her sleeve. Claire pulled free and reached the security panel. Before she could enter the code, the room spun.

The tea.

She had not drunk it, but Daniel had sprayed something onto the cloth he pressed near her while pretending to steady her.

Claire fought to stay conscious.

The last thing she saw was Daniel placing the signed pages beneath her hand and pressing a pen between her fingers.

When she woke, she was on the floor. Police lights flashed through the windows.

Daniel was telling Officer Reyes that Claire had attacked him during a psychotic episode.

Evelyn held the documents and cried.

But Daniel had made one mistake.

He believed Claire’s recorder was inside her jacket.

He had searched the pockets, found nothing, and assumed she had failed.

The recorder remained beneath the tape near her collarbone as paramedics carried her to the ambulance.

At the hospital, Daniel followed, determined to complete the performance.

He did not know Dr. Lena was working an overnight shift after successfully challenging her suspension.

And he did not know Lena would notice the unfamiliar shape beneath the tape.
