Chapter 6 - The Perfect Surrender
At the next board meeting, Claire arrived without a lawyer.
She wore a simple gray suit and carried no documents. Daniel looked almost disappointed.
“I will take a temporary leave,” she announced.
Priya stared at her, though the decision had been rehearsed.
Daniel stood slowly.
“That is the responsible choice.”
“I have one condition. The transfer lasts seven days, pending an independent medical review.”
The board accepted immediately.
Daniel became acting chief executive before noon.
By two o’clock, he had replaced the head of security, suspended Priya, and authorized Northstar to begin reviewing Hartwell’s patents. He moved with the speed of a man following a plan prepared long ago.
Claire returned home and began acting confused.
Evelyn became kinder.
That kindness frightened Claire more than cruelty.
“You should sign a longer medical authorization,” Evelyn said over dinner. “Let Daniel manage everything while you recover.”
Claire lowered her eyes.
“Maybe you are right.”
Daniel’s hand settled over hers.
“We only want what is best for you.”
The recorder in Claire’s jacket captured every word.
But they were careful. They did not discuss forged reports or stolen funds. Their statements were manipulative, not criminal.
Meanwhile, Priya entered the records room using a borrowed facilities badge. She found Naomi’s safe behind a row of archived contracts. The hardware key was still inside.
Then the building alarms activated.
Priya escaped through a service stairwell seconds before security sealed the exits. She sent Claire a single message.
I have it.
The encrypted files revealed bank transfers, false invoices, and draft contracts for the sale of Hartwell’s patents. They also contained emails between Martin and Daniel discussing Claire’s “medical timeline.”
One email mentioned “the final incident” that would justify permanent incapacity.
The date was the following night.
Claire wanted to go directly to the police. Lena warned that the evidence could still be challenged if Daniel claimed the files were fabricated or illegally obtained. Officer Reyes, whom Lena trusted, agreed to review the material quietly, but he needed time to secure warrants.
“We do not have time,” Claire said.
“Then do not return home,” Reyes replied.
Claire looked at the email again.
If she disappeared, Daniel might destroy the remaining records and blame her breakdown. If she stayed, he would attempt the final incident.
“I can make him talk,” she said.
Lena objected. Reyes objected more strongly.
Claire listened to both of them.
Then she returned home anyway.
Before entering, she placed the recorder beneath a strip of medical tape near her collarbone. If Daniel searched her pockets, he would not find it.
She also scheduled an automatic email containing Naomi’s files to be sent to the board, federal investigators, and three newspapers the following morning.
If Claire did not cancel the message by eight o’clock, Daniel’s plan would become public.

Daniel and Evelyn were waiting in the dark.
