Chapter 6 - The First DNA Result)

Marcus returned to Manhattan before midnight.

The hotel floor had been locked down.

Two security officers stood outside the suite.

He entered quietly.

Evelyn was asleep on the sofa.

Noah and Eli had built a crooked fortress out of cushions and blankets before falling asleep inside it.

Marcus stood over them.

For years, business had trained him to distrust emotion.

Numbers were reliable.

Contracts were measurable.

People were not.

Now everything important in his life rested inside a blanket fort.

Evelyn woke.

"You found him."

Marcus nodded.

"Harold admitted the signature was forged."

She stared at him.

"Just like that?"

"Not exactly."

He told her about the threat.

About Adrian.

About the key.

Evelyn listened without interrupting.

When he finished, she asked, "Do you think Eleanor sent the warning?"

"I don't know."

"That's new."

"What?"

"You admitting you don't know."

Marcus almost smiled.

His phone buzzed.

Daniel had returned separately and was still coordinating forensic testing.

The message was from the laboratory.

Preliminary paternity results available.

Marcus's hand went cold.

Evelyn saw his face.

"Is that it?"

He nodded.

"Open it."

"You sure?"

"Marcus."

He opened the secure document.

Probability of paternity.

99.9998 percent.

Marcus stared.

The numbers blurred.

He handed the phone to Evelyn.

She read it.

Then she sat down.

Neither spoke.

There was no triumphant revelation.

No dramatic embrace.

Only five years settling between them.

Marcus looked toward the blanket fort.

"My sons."

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

"Yes."

He sat across from her.

"I am sorry."

She looked away.

"I know sorry doesn't fix anything."

"No."

"I know I can't ask you to forget."

"No."

"I know I don't deserve five years back."

Her voice softened.

"Nobody gets years back."

Marcus nodded.

"Then I'll earn whatever comes next."

Evelyn looked at him for a long moment.

"You might not like what comes next."

"Try me."

"You don't get to arrive as the rich father and become their hero because you buy them things."

"I won't."

"You don't get to make decisions about school, doctors, or where we live without me."

"Agreed."

"You don't get to use your lawyers to scare me."

"Never."

"And if you disappear because your company gets difficult..."

"I won't."

"You don't know that."

Marcus leaned forward.

"Then judge me by what I do."

Evelyn's expression shifted.

Not forgiveness.

But possibility.

The board meeting had been postponed until the following afternoon because Marcus had threatened immediate litigation if Eleanor attempted action without proper notice.

He now had twelve hours.

At seven in the morning, Noah woke and found Marcus making pancakes badly.

The hotel kitchen could have sent a chef.

Marcus refused.

He burned the first three.

Eli walked in and stared at the smoking pan.

"You're bad at breakfast."

Marcus nodded.

"Extremely."

Noah climbed onto a stool.

"Mom makes dinosaur pancakes."

Marcus looked at the round mess in his pan.

"This could be a dinosaur."

"It's a potato."

"An extinct potato."

The boys laughed.

Evelyn watched from the doorway.

For five minutes, they were not heirs, evidence, or leverage in a family war.

They were children.

Then the suite phone rang.

Hotel security.

Eleanor was downstairs again.

This time she had attorneys.

Marcus told security to send one attorney up.

Not Eleanor.

Ten minutes later, Rebecca Sloan entered.

She represented Hale Family Holdings.

Rebecca placed a formal envelope on the table.

"Your mother is petitioning for an emergency injunction."

"Against what?"

"Disclosure of confidential trust material."

Daniel, who had arrived moments earlier, laughed.

"That sounds like someone worried about documents."

Rebecca ignored him.

She looked at Evelyn.

"Ms. Carter, Mrs. Hale is prepared to offer you five million dollars."

Marcus stood.

Rebecca held up a hand.

"I am required to communicate the offer."

Evelyn's face hardened.

"For what?"

"Relocation. Permanent confidentiality. Waiver of all claims against Hale Family Holdings."

"And my children?"

Rebecca hesitated.

"Would remain solely in your custody."

Marcus stared.

Eleanor wasn't trying to take the boys.

She was trying to make them disappear again.

Evelyn asked, "Five million?"

"Yes."

Noah entered holding his teddy bear.

Everyone went silent.

He looked at the adults.

"Are we in trouble?"

Evelyn immediately knelt.

"No."

Noah looked at Marcus.

"Is Grandma mad because we're yours?"

Rebecca lowered her eyes.

Marcus crouched beside the boy.

"You haven't done anything wrong."

Noah whispered, "She doesn't like us."

Marcus felt anger rise.

"That's her problem. Not yours."

Noah considered him.

Then handed Marcus the teddy bear.

"Hold Bear."

Marcus took it.

The toy was old and unusually heavy.

Something inside shifted.

A faint metallic click.

Evelyn looked sharply at it.

"What?"

Marcus squeezed the lower seam.

"There's something inside."

Evelyn frowned.

"I never put anything in there."

Daniel brought a small sewing kit from the hotel desk.

They opened a loose seam carefully.

Inside the stuffing was a plastic pouch.

Noah stared.

"Bear ate something."

Marcus removed the pouch.

A tiny memory card fell into his palm.

Evelyn went pale.

"That teddy bear came from your father."

Marcus looked at her.

"What?"

"It arrived in the hospital the day the twins were born."

"My father was dead."

"I know."

She swallowed.

"There was a card."

"What did it say?"

Evelyn looked toward Eleanor's attorney.

Rebecca Sloan had become very still.

Marcus noticed.

"Rebecca?"

She backed toward the door.

"I think this meeting is finished."

Daniel stepped sideways.

"Do you recognize that card?"

"No."

"You do."

Rebecca's face changed.

Not guilt.

Fear.

"Marcus, whatever is on that memory card, do not open it on a networked computer."

Marcus stared at her.

"Why?"

Rebecca looked at the boys.

Then at Evelyn.

"Because your father knew exactly what Eleanor would do if these children were ever born."

She opened the door.

May you like

Before leaving, she looked at Marcus one final time.

"And he planned for it."
