Chapter 4 - The Suite on the Twenty-Third Floor)

By eight that morning, Marcus had moved Evelyn and the boys from the airport hotel to the Hale Grand Manhattan.

Evelyn objected.

Marcus expected that.

"This is not permanent," she said as the private elevator climbed toward the twenty-third floor.

"I know."

"I am not accepting charity."

"I know."

"And the boys don't need marble bathrooms, room service, or people carrying their backpacks."

"I know."

She looked at him suspiciously.

"You've learned two words overnight."

Eli giggled.

It was the first time Marcus had heard either boy laugh.

The sound almost destroyed him.

The suite occupied the quiet end of a secured floor normally reserved for diplomats and celebrities.

Marcus had personally designed the renovation three years earlier.

He had once considered it one of his finest projects.

Now he saw it through the eyes of two five-year-olds.

Noah ran to the window.

"Mom! Planes!"

Eli followed.

For ten minutes the twins forgot fear.

Marcus watched them press their palms to the glass.

Evelyn watched Marcus.

He could feel it.

"You can stop studying me," he said.

"I'm studying them."

"They seem happy."

"They've been through a lot."

Marcus nodded.

"I understand."

"No. You don't."

He turned.

She wasn't trying to hurt him.

That made the statement more powerful.

"No," Marcus said. "I don't."

A knock came at the suite door.

Daniel entered carrying two banker boxes and a laptop.

Behind him was a woman in her early thirties with dark hair and rectangular glasses.

"This is Maya Chen," Daniel said. "Forensic document examiner."

Maya spread enlarged scans of the settlement agreement across the dining table.

She showed Marcus variations in pressure, ink flow, and microscopic hesitation marks.

"Whoever signed your name practiced it," she said.

"So it's forged?"

"I would state with high confidence that the signature was simulated."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

For five years she had hated Marcus for something he had never done.

Marcus understood the realization did not erase what she had suffered.

But he saw the first crack in the wall between them.

Maya pointed to another mark.

"The notary stamp is genuine."

"Harold Vale?"

"Yes."

Daniel opened a file.

"We found him."

Marcus leaned forward.

"Where?"

"Vermont."

"Call him."

"I did."

"And?"

"He hung up when I said your name."

Evelyn folded her arms.

"That sounds promising."

Daniel continued.

"I also obtained historical trust documents."

He slid a thick binder toward Marcus.

The Gray-Hale Testamentary Trust had been created by Marcus's grandfather, Jonathan Gray Hale, in 1987.

Its holdings included thirteen percent of Hale Hospitality's voting shares.

Control remained with the designated trustee until Richard Hale had two direct biological descendants in the next generation.

Marcus frowned.

"Two?"

Daniel nodded.

"Not one grandchild. Two."

Evelyn looked toward Noah and Eli.

"The twins."

"Exactly."

Marcus read the language.

"Why would my grandfather structure it like this?"

"We're still figuring that out."

Daniel tapped another section.

"There's something stranger. When Richard died, Eleanor became temporary trustee. But the trust required her to disclose any qualifying descendants within thirty days."

Marcus understood immediately.

"She would lose control."

"Of thirteen percent of the company's voting shares."

"That's enough to change board control."

"Under certain coalitions, yes."

Evelyn slowly sat down.

"So she didn't hate me because I was poor."

Marcus looked at her.

"Maybe not only because you were poor."

She gave him a humorless smile.

"Comforting."

Noah came to the table holding a toy airplane.

"Are you my dad?"

The adults went silent.

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

She did not rescue him.

The question belonged to him.

Marcus crouched.

"I think I am."

Noah frowned.

"You think?"

"We're going to do a test so we know for sure."

Eli appeared behind his brother.

"Does it hurt?"

"No."

Marcus remembered Daniel saying cheek swabs would be enough.

"Just a little cotton swab inside your mouth."

Eli considered this.

"Then will you be our dad?"

Marcus felt Evelyn's gaze.

"If the test says I'm your father, then I already was your dad. I just didn't know it."

Noah's eyes filled with something Marcus could not identify.

Hope was too dangerous a word.

"Would you leave again?"

Marcus could not answer quickly.

Children noticed hesitation.

Evelyn did too.

Marcus finally said, "If I'm your father, I will not disappear from your lives."

Noah nodded.

That seemed enough for now.

Daniel's phone rang.

He stepped toward the window.

When he returned, his expression had changed.

"Marcus, there's a problem at Hale Hospitality."

"How bad?"

"Your mother called an emergency board meeting."

Marcus stood.

"About what?"

"You."

He almost laughed.

"Of course."

Daniel handed him a printed notice.

The board would meet at three.

Agenda item one.

Temporary removal of Marcus Hale as Chief Executive Officer due to alleged instability, misuse of corporate property, and exposure to potential extortion.

Evelyn read over his shoulder.

"Extortion?"

"Eleanor is framing your return as an attack on the company," Daniel said.

Marcus's phone rang.

Board chairman Warren Pike.

Marcus answered.

"Marcus, what the hell is happening?"

"My mother forged documents to hide my children."

Silence.

Then Warren said, "You'd better have proof."

"I will."

Marcus ended the call.

Evelyn stood near the table.

"You don't have to destroy your company over us."

Marcus looked at her.

"She already made this about more than us."

Daniel closed his laptop.

"We need Harold Vale."

Marcus nodded.

"Then we go to Vermont."

Evelyn's gaze moved toward the photograph of Richard Hale and the unknown baby.

"What about Adrian Cole?"

Marcus picked up the brass key.

"We find him too."

Before anyone could say more, the suite phone rang.

Marcus answered.

Hotel security.

"Mr. Hale, we have a woman downstairs demanding access to the children."

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

"Who?"

The security director hesitated.

"Your mother."

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"Do not let her up."

"Understood."

"And remove her access credentials from every Hale property I control."

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

Marcus continued.

"Effective immediately."

He hung up.

For the first time that morning, Evelyn looked almost impressed.

Then Marcus's phone buzzed with a message.

Unknown number.

He opened it.

A photograph appeared.

It showed Evelyn entering the hotel with Noah and Eli twenty minutes earlier.

Taken from across the street.
