Chapter 8 - The Vault Beneath the Children’s Nursery

The blue key did not fit any visible lock in the mansion.

Adrian searched Lillian’s old papers while Mara examined the wooden airplane.

Beneath the wing, she found tiny numbers carved into the wood.

11-06-20.

The twins’ birthday.

Behind the date was a sequence of four symbols.

Moon.

Bird.

Flame.

Eye.

Mara recognized them from somewhere.

The memory refused to form.

Ethan sat beside her.

“You made that airplane.”

“I did?”

“You painted the wing.”

Noah pointed to the moon symbol.

“You said the order mattered.”

Adrian entered carrying the original architectural plans for the mansion.

“There is no marked vault near the nursery.”

Mara looked at the plans.

“The official plans won’t show it.”

“How do you know?”

She touched the page near the eastern wall.

“Because this measurement is wrong.”

Adrian compared the dimensions.

The exterior wall was nearly four feet deeper than the interior room suggested.

A hidden space.

They moved the twins into Adrian’s bedroom under guard and returned to the nursery.

Celeste had been confined to a guest suite, though Adrian had not yet contacted the police.

Mara questioned that decision.

“She tried to take the key.”

“She also controls a corporation with government contracts and some of the most aggressive attorneys in the country,” Adrian said. “If I accuse her without evidence, she will bury the investigation.”

“So you’re pretending not to know?”

“I’m making her believe she still has time.”

They searched the nursery walls.

Behind a built-in bookshelf, Mara found four carved symbols matching the airplane.

She pressed moon, bird, flame and eye.

Nothing happened.

Ethan, watching through the doorway despite the guard’s protest, said, “Wrong order.”

Mara turned.

“What is the right order?”

He looked at Noah’s airplane.

“Mommy said memory starts with what you see, then what you lose, then what survives, then what guides you home.”

Eye.

Flame.

Bird.

Moon.

Mara pressed the symbols.

The bookshelf moved aside.

A narrow room appeared.

Inside stood a steel cabinet, a child-sized chair and an old video camera.

On the wall were dozens of photographs.

Mara at the twins’ birth.

Mara holding Noah beside a Christmas tree.

Mara asleep with Ethan on her chest.

Mara and Adrian laughing in the kitchen.

Her life.

She touched one photograph.

A memory returned in full.

Adrian stood behind her, guiding her hands as she cut a cake.

She turned and spread frosting across his cheek.

He kissed her while the twins laughed from their highchairs.

The memory was so complete she could smell sugar and coffee.

Mara covered her mouth.

Adrian stood motionless beside her.

“You remember?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“Our first birthday with the boys.”

His eyes closed.

When he opened them, the distance between them felt suddenly smaller.

Mara stepped away.

“We need to open the cabinet.”

The blue key fit.

Inside were medical files, hard drives and a sealed blood sample.

The top file contained genetic test results.

Lillian Vale and Celeste Vale were biological half-sisters.

Their shared father was Dr. Gideon Vale.

Their mothers were listed under coded identities.

A second report showed Lillian’s DNA compared with Noah and Ethan.

Probability of maternity: 99.9998 percent.

Mara sat down.

There it was.

Scientific certainty.

She was their mother.

Adrian knelt in front of her.

“You don’t have to remember everything to be who you are.”

“But I don’t feel like the woman in these photographs.”

“You don’t have to become exactly who she was.”

“I don’t know whether she loved you.”

Adrian’s expression softened.

“She did.”

“How can you be sure?”

“Because she told me every day.”

Mara looked away.

“I don’t remember saying it.”

“I remember hearing it.”

Before she could answer, one of the hard drives activated.

A screen inside the cabinet displayed a recorded date from four days before the plane crash.

Lillian appeared with a bruise on her face.

“If Adrian finds this, the security system has failed. Marcus is working with Celeste, but he is not loyal to her. Jonas believes he can extract me and fake my death long enough to expose Orpheus.”

Mara leaned closer.

Lillian continued.

“I agreed because Celeste threatened the twins. But I no longer trust Jonas. He injected me without permission during the first extraction attempt.”

The video shifted.

A distorted image showed Jonas arguing with someone outside the hidden room.

Then Lillian said, “The most important evidence is not in this cabinet. It is inside Subject Zero.”

The recording ended.

Adrian searched the files.

“No Subject Zero appears anywhere else.”

Mara’s head began to ache.

The room blurred.

A voice returned from her memory.

Gideon Vale saying, You were the first one who survived.

Mara looked at the medical chair.

“Subject Zero is not a file.”

Adrian understood.

“It’s you.”

A low beeping sound came from the cabinet.

Celeste’s voice emerged through a hidden speaker.

“Thank you for opening the vault, Lillian.”

The steel door slammed shut behind them.

Gas began pouring from the ceiling.
