Chapter 6 - The Man Who Gave Her a New Life

Marcus escaped through a service tunnel beneath the conservatory.
Adrian’s security team found a blood trail but no body.
By sunrise, the mansion had been locked down.
No staff member could leave.
No phone call went unmonitored.
Celeste demanded an explanation.
Adrian told her there had been an attempted theft.
He did not mention the underground room, the video or Lillian.
Mara remained in the twins’ suite while Adrian questioned security employees.
Ethan and Noah sat on either side of her.
“Are you our mommy?” Noah asked.
Mara looked at both boys.
The truth was too large to give them and too fragile to promise.
“I think I may have known you before.”
Noah took her hand.
“That means yes.”
Ethan shook his head.
“It means someone changed her.”
Mara stared at him.
“How do you know that?”
He walked to a toy chest and removed a picture book.
Inside the back cover was a folded piece of paper.
He gave it to her.
The drawing showed a woman lying in a chair beneath a bright lamp. A man with a scar stood beside her. Another man wore glasses.
Jonas wore glasses.
“Did you draw this?”
Ethan nodded.
“When?”
“After Mommy died.”
“You saw this happen?”
“In a dream.”
Noah whispered, “It wasn’t a dream.”
Mara unfolded the rest of the paper.
Behind the chair, Ethan had drawn a red door and a black bird.
The image triggered another memory.
She was strapped to a medical chair.
Jonas stood near the red door arguing with Marcus.
“You promised she wouldn’t be harmed,” Jonas said.
Marcus answered, “The treatment has already begun.”
Celeste entered wearing black gloves.
“If she remembers Adrian, increase the dose.”
Mara returned to the present, gasping.
Noah began crying.
“I’m sorry,” she said, pulling both boys close. “I’m sorry.”
The embrace felt familiar.
Not intellectually.
Physically.
Her arms knew the shape of them.
Her body knew how Noah rested his forehead beneath her chin.
Her hand knew Ethan preferred slow circles between his shoulders when he was afraid.
Mara began to cry.
Ethan held her tighter.
“You remembered us.”
“Only a little.”
“That’s enough for today.”
His words sounded like something she had once told him.
Later, Adrian entered carrying a tablet.
“I found Jonas Reed.”
Mara wiped her face.
“Where?”
“A farmhouse in Pennsylvania registered under another name. My team is preparing to bring him here.”
“No.”
Adrian looked at her.
“He protected me for three years.”
“He also lied to you for three years.”
“He may have saved my life.”
“And he may have helped erase it.”
Mara stood.
“I’m going with you.”
“It could be a trap.”
“So could staying here.”
Adrian glanced at the twins.
Celeste appeared in the doorway.
“Going somewhere?”
Adrian’s expression remained calm.
“Philadelphia. Business.”
“At seven in the evening?”
“The Asian markets open overnight.”
Celeste looked from him to Mara.
“Does your maid usually attend market meetings?”
“She witnessed the shooting.”
“So this is about security?”
“Yes.”
Celeste smiled.
“Then Marcus should accompany you.”
“Marcus is missing.”
For a fraction of a second, Celeste’s eyes changed.
She recovered immediately.
“Missing?”
“He left the property without authorization.”
“How strange.”
“You don’t seem worried.”
“I never trusted him.”
Mara almost laughed.
Instead, she noticed Celeste rubbing the inside of her wrist.
Beneath her bracelet was a faint circular mark.
Not a scar.
An injection site.
Celeste caught Mara looking and lowered her sleeve.
Two hours later, Adrian and Mara left through a private garage with four security officers.
They reached Jonas’s farmhouse shortly before midnight.
The front door was open.
A single light burned inside.
Mara entered first.
“Jonas?”
No answer.
The living room had been destroyed.
Furniture overturned.
Papers burned in the fireplace.
Adrian found blood near the kitchen.
Mara followed the trail downstairs.
Jonas sat tied to a chair in the basement.
His shirt was soaked red.
She rushed to him.
“Jonas.”
His eyes opened.
“You came.”
“Who did this?”
“Marcus.”
Adrian cut the ropes.
Jonas looked at him.
“You should never have brought her back to that house.”
“I didn’t bring her,” Adrian said. “She came looking for the truth.”
Jonas coughed.
“The truth will kill everyone she loves.”
Mara knelt in front of him.
“Tell me who I am.”
Jonas looked into her eyes.
“You are Lillian Hawthorne.”
The words settled over the room.
Mara could not breathe.
Adrian closed his eyes briefly.
Jonas continued.
“But Lillian Hawthorne was not your first name.”
Mara stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
Jonas reached weakly toward a metal cabinet.
“Before Adrian, before the twins, before Celeste... there was another family.”
Inside the cabinet, Adrian found a sealed file.
The label read:
SUBJECT 17
ORIGINAL IDENTITY: UNKNOWN
RECOVERY NAME: LILLIAN VALE
Mara looked at Jonas.
“Vale?”
He nodded.
“Celeste is not your childhood friend.”
The basement window shattered.
Jonas jerked violently as a bullet struck his chest.
May you like
Before Adrian could reach him, Jonas whispered his final words.
“She is your sister.”
