Chapter 12 - The Second Twin Became the Target

Adrian and the police rushed into the red room as Mara shouted Ethan’s name.

Detective Brooks disconnected the main power.

The lights died.

Emergency batteries activated immediately.

The transfer continued.

Celeste crawled toward the console.

“You cannot stop it by cutting power.”

Adrian pinned her against the floor.

“How do we stop it?”

She looked at Noah.

“I don’t know.”

Mara slapped her.

“You built this.”

“My father built the core system. Once it begins searching for a compatible host, it follows the neural network.”

Adrian seized her by the collar.

“My son is connected from a hospital forty miles away.”

“The sedative in Ethan’s blood contains the synchronization compound.”

Mara remembered the injection found near him.

Celeste had planned for either twin.

Marcus groaned near the wall.

“Server room,” he whispered.

Mara knelt beside him.

“What?”

“Destroy the source archive. No archive, no transfer.”

“Where is it?”

“Sublevel two.”

Celeste laughed.

“The archive is protected by a thermal lock. Destroying it will release every stored pattern into the network.”

“What does that mean?” Adrian asked.

Marcus struggled to breathe.

“Every patient memory... transmitted to every synchronized subject.”

Mara looked at Noah.

“And Ethan.”

Marcus nodded.

They had two options.

Allow Sophie’s pattern to transfer into Ethan.

Or destroy the archive and risk flooding both boys with fragments from hundreds of victims.

Celeste looked at Mara.

“There is another way.”

“What?”

“You become the host.”

Adrian said, “No.”

Celeste continued.

“The system was calibrated on you. Your brain can absorb the archive without immediate rejection.”

“Immediate?”

“You may lose your restored memories.”

“Or?”

“You may lose your identity completely.”

Adrian moved between them.

“Find another solution.”

“There isn’t time,” Celeste said.

A timer appeared.

TRANSFER TO SECONDARY HOST: 07:42

Seven minutes.

Mara touched Noah’s face.

His convulsions had stopped, but he was barely conscious.

Adrian took her hand.

“You are not sacrificing yourself.”

“He is our son.”

“So is Ethan.”

“That is why I have to do this.”

“We just found you.”

Mara looked at him.

“You found part of me.”

“I don’t care which name you use.”

“I do.”

His voice broke.

“I lost you once because I wasn’t there. I will not stand here and watch it happen again.”

Mara touched his face.

A memory returned.

Their wedding night.

Adrian promising he would always find her.

Lillian laughing and saying, Even if I forget where I am?

Especially then.

Mara whispered, “You already kept your promise.”

She turned toward Celeste.

“How?”

Celeste entered a command.

The medical chair beside Noah unfolded from the wall.

Electrodes descended.

“You sit. You sing the complete sequence. The archive will recognize its original pattern and redirect.”

Adrian aimed his gun at Celeste.

“If she dies, you die.”

Celeste looked at him almost sadly.

“I stopped caring about death a long time ago.”

Mara sat in the chair.

The restraints closed around her wrists.

The screen scanned her eyes.

SUBJECT ZERO CONFIRMED.

TRANSFER REDIRECTION AVAILABLE.

Celeste placed a microphone near Mara’s lips.

“Sing.”

Mara began the lullaby.

The first verse brought back Ethan’s birth.

The second brought back Noah’s first steps.

The third brought back Adrian asking her to dance in the kitchen while rain struck the windows.

Then came the hidden notes.

The original Orpheus sequence.

The room disappeared.

Mara stood inside a corridor made from memories.

Doors opened on either side.

Behind one, a child called for her mother.

Behind another, a soldier begged to forget a battlefield.

Behind another, Celeste sat beside a little girl named Sophie.

At the end of the corridor stood Gideon Vale.

“You always return,” he said.

“You’re dead.”

“Memory does not require life.”

“You are only a pattern.”

“So are you.”

Mara continued singing.

The system announced:

ARCHIVE TRANSFER AT 32 PERCENT.

Adrian shouted her name, but his voice sounded far away.

Gideon approached.

“If you absorb them, you will carry every subject.”

“I will release them.”

“You cannot release what has nowhere to go.”

“Then I’ll destroy you.”

He smiled.

“You tried before.”

Another memory opened.

Lillian standing in the underground room.

She was not hiding the Orpheus evidence merely to expose Celeste.

She was preparing to use the sequence to erase the entire archive.

Jonas stopped her because hundreds of patients would lose their only chance to recover stolen memories.

Mara understood the true purpose of Subject Zero.

She was not a storage device.

She was the master key capable of returning each memory to its original owner.

But many owners were dead.

And one memory pattern did not belong to any patient file.

A boy’s face appeared.

He looked like Ethan and Noah, but older.

Gideon whispered, “Ask Adrian about the third child.”

Mara stopped singing.

The archive transfer froze at 79 percent.

Alarms screamed.

Adrian leaned over her.

“Keep going.”

She stared at him through the restraints.

May you like

“What third child?”

His expression told her he knew.
