Chapter 13 - The Evidence That Named Nicole

They escaped through the drainage pipe seconds before the cavern collapsed.
Emergency crews pulled Daniel from the reservoir. Hale emerged with a broken arm. Reed suffered a deep cut across his shoulder but remained conscious.
Harper was carried out on a stretcher.
Captain Ward was dead.
Evelyn stood beside the ambulances, soaked and furious.
When she saw Daniel, she did not run to him.
She walked slowly.
Daniel sat wrapped in a blanket, oxygen beneath his nose.
For eighteen years, Evelyn had imagined this moment.
She had imagined striking him.
Embracing him.
Demanding explanations.
Instead, she stopped several feet away.
“You look terrible,” she said.
Daniel smiled weakly.
“You look beautiful.”
She slapped him.
The sound turned several heads.
Then she leaned forward and held him.
Daniel buried his face against her shoulder.
Nicole looked away, giving them the privacy of pretending nobody watched.
Agent Chen approached with a tablet.
“We have the archive.”
“All of it?” Nicole asked.
“Approximately sixty percent uploaded before the terminal was destroyed.”
“Where did it go?”
“To a federal evidence server, three media organizations, and an encrypted private recipient.”
“N.T.”
“Yes.”
“Can you identify the recipient?”
“Not yet.”
Chen opened a file.
“There’s another problem.”
The document contained financial transfers tied to weapons sales.
Nicole’s name appeared on every page.
Her service number authorized transport clearances.
Her biometric signature approved disposal contracts.
Her voice appeared in recorded calls.
“They fabricated everything,” Reed said.
Chen shook her head.
“Some records predate the current investigation by twelve years.”
Nicole stared.
“I was a captain twelve years ago. I didn’t have authority for these transfers.”
“The files show special authorization.”
“From whom?”
“General Marcus Hale.”
Everyone looked toward Hale.
His injured arm was secured in a sling.
He approached.
“I never issued it.”
Chen said, “Your biometric signature is attached.”
“Stolen credentials.”
“The same explanation cannot protect both of you forever.”
Daniel spoke from the ambulance.
“It wasn’t stolen.”
Nicole turned.
“What?”
Daniel looked exhausted.
“Nathaniel cloned your access profiles.”
“How?”
“He had medical and training data from Nicole’s childhood. For Marcus, he used Site Seven records.”
Hale frowned.
“That would create a historical copy, not a current biometric signature.”
“Unless someone updated the profiles from inside the military system.”
Nicole remembered the photograph taken while she slept inside a secure compound.
“Wexler.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Wexler had access, but he was not the architect.”
“Who was?”
Daniel’s eyes moved toward the assembled military personnel.
Before he could answer, federal vehicles surrounded the area.
A senior official stepped out.
Deputy Director Helen Price of the Defense Criminal Investigative Service.
Nicole had met her twice during classified briefings.
Price approached with armed agents.
“Colonel Nicole Turner, you are being detained pending investigation into unauthorized weapons transfers, conspiracy, and treason.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“My daughter exposed the operation.”
Price looked at her.
“The released archive identifies Colonel Turner as its principal coordinator.”
“It was falsified,” Hale said.
Price faced him.
“You are also being detained.”
Reed reached for his credentials.
Agents raised their weapons.
Nicole lifted her hand.
“Stand down.”
“Colonel,” Reed said.
“That is an order.”
He lowered his hand.
Price held out restraints.
Nicole did not resist.
As an agent secured her wrists, Daniel called her name.
She looked at him.
He mouthed two words.
NOT PRICE.
Nicole understood.
Price was not the architect.
But she might be another piece on the board.
The agents placed Nicole and Hale in separate vehicles.
Evelyn watched them leave.
Daniel attempted to stand.
“You need a hospital,” a paramedic said.
“I need a phone.”
Evelyn gave him hers.
He dialed a number from memory.
Someone answered.
Daniel said, “The archive transferred.”
A woman’s voice replied, “I know.”
“Nathaniel escaped.”
“I know.”
“Nicole has been taken.”
A pause.
“Then the final protocol has begun.”
Evelyn stared at Daniel.
“Who is that?”
He placed the call on speaker.
The woman said, “Mrs. Turner, my name is Nora Tate.”
The initials struck Evelyn immediately.
N.T.
“Did you receive the archive?” Evelyn asked.
“Yes.”
“Who are you?”
“I was Nathaniel Turner’s first successor.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Evelyn tightened her grip on the phone.
May you like
Nora continued.
“And Colonel Nicole Turner is my daughter.”
