Chapter 12 - The Grandfather in the Quarry

Nicole stepped into the chamber.

Reed and the investigators spread out behind the rocks.

Harper remained in the drainage passage.

Nathaniel Turner smiled.

“My finest student.”

Nicole raised her weapon.

“Release my father.”

Daniel’s hands were bound to the chair.

Hale stood beside him, expression unreadable.

Wexler commanded eight armed soldiers positioned around the chamber.

Nathaniel’s medical chair contained oxygen tubes, monitors, and intravenous lines. His skin appeared almost translucent.

Yet his voice remained firm.

“You look like your grandmother.”

“I came for Dad.”

“You came for answers.”

“I can take both.”

Nathaniel smiled.

“No. You will be given one and earn the other.”

Evelyn’s voice came through Nicole’s earpiece from the tunnel command post.

“Do not listen to him.”

Nathaniel heard it through Nicole’s radio.

“Evelyn. Still interfering.”

Evelyn replied, “Still breathing.”

“An unfortunate habit.”

Nicole stepped closer.

“Why keep Dad alive?”

“Because Daniel possessed an unusual resistance to conditioning.”

Daniel laughed weakly.

“You mean I refused to worship you.”

Nathaniel’s eyes moved toward him.

“You confused defiance with morality.”

“And you confused fear with loyalty.”

Wexler struck Daniel across the face.

Nicole raised her weapon higher.

“Touch him again.”

Wexler smiled. “Or what? You’ll shoot me in front of your grandfather?”

“I’ll shoot you because you talk too much.”

Nathaniel lifted one finger.

Wexler stepped back.

Nicole looked at Hale.

“Which side are you on?”

Hale’s face tightened.

“The side that keeps you alive.”

“You gave them the code.”

“I gave them a false code.”

Daniel looked at Nicole.

“Marcus delayed the transfer.”

“Then why use the phrase?”

“To warn you the network was listening,” Hale said. “I knew the wounded investigator would repeat it.”

Nathaniel sighed.

“Marcus has always overestimated his cleverness.”

Hale turned.

“You forged Daniel’s messages.”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe he wanted us to stop searching.”

“I needed you useful, not loyal.”

Pain crossed Hale’s face.

Nicole focused on Nathaniel.

“What is Asset Lazarus?”

“Your father.”

“Why that name?”

“Because he died publicly and became valuable privately.”

“For what?”

“His nervous system carried the final encryption layer.”

Nicole looked at Daniel.

He nodded once.

“They used biological response patterns,” he said. “Heart rhythm, retinal movement, memory recall. I was the lock.”

Nathaniel smiled at Nicole.

“And you are the key.”

“Then open the archive yourself.”

“I cannot. Daniel altered the sequence.”

Daniel’s mouth curved into a tired smile.

“I learned from the best.”

Nathaniel’s expression hardened.

“For eighteen years, he refused to reveal the alteration.”

Nicole understood.

“That’s why you brought me here.”

“Your presence will persuade him.”

“It hasn’t so far.”

Nathaniel looked at Wexler.

The general pressed a control.

A second screen activated.

Evelyn stood inside the tunnel command post.

Behind her, a military investigator raised a pistol.

Reed swore.

Nicole recognized the investigator.

Captain Ellis Ward, part of Hale’s security team.

The same man who had been near Caleb at the library.

The traitor.

Nathaniel said, “Your mother’s life for the altered sequence.”

Daniel pulled against his restraints.

“Do not give it to him.”

Nicole watched the screen.

Ward pressed the pistol against Evelyn’s head.

Evelyn remained calm.

“Nicole,” she said, “your father and I did not raise you to negotiate with cowards.”

Nathaniel leaned forward in his chair.

“The sequence.”

Nicole lowered her weapon.

Wexler smiled.

“Begin with the red barn.”

Nicole looked at her grandfather.

Childhood memories returned.

Nathaniel placing objects on a table.

Red barn.

Silver coin.

Blue train.

Seven white stones.

But another memory surfaced beneath them.

Daniel entering the room after Nathaniel left.

Moving the stones.

Turning the coin.

Whispering:

“When someone tells you there is only one sequence, find the second.”

Nicole looked at Daniel.

He gave no visible signal.

She began.

“Red barn.”

A terminal beside Nathaniel activated.

“Silver coin.”

The screen displayed biometric verification.

“Blue train.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Seven white stones.”

The terminal requested continuation.

Nathaniel’s breathing quickened.

“And?” he asked.

Nicole looked at the photograph of herself attached to the terminal.

Her service number.

Her fingerprints.

Her entire life reduced to a key.

She said, “Black river.”

The terminal flashed.

SEQUENCE ACCEPTED.

Nathaniel smiled.

Then alarms sounded.

SEQUENCE REVERSAL ACTIVE.

Every door in the chamber locked.

Wexler turned toward the terminal.

“What did she do?”

Daniel laughed.

Nicole raised her weapon again.

“My father taught me the second sequence.”

Files began uploading from the terminal.

Financial records.

Names.

Military credentials.

Photographs.

Nathaniel’s network was being transmitted to multiple external servers.

Wexler fired at the terminal.

Hale tackled him.

Reed and the investigators opened fire on the surrounding soldiers.

The cavern erupted.

Nicole ran to Daniel.

On the screen, Captain Ward dragged Evelyn toward an exit.

Harper appeared behind him.

Ward turned and fired.

Harper fell.

Evelyn seized his arm, forcing the second shot into the ceiling.

The video feed vanished.

Nicole cut Daniel’s restraints.

“Can you walk?”

“With help.”

Nathaniel’s medical chair began moving toward a hidden passage.

Nicole aimed at him.

“Stop.”

He looked back.

“You believe the archive is my only legacy?”

The chamber shook.

Explosives detonated in the quarry walls.

Water burst through cracks in the cavern.

Nathaniel disappeared behind a closing door.

Wexler threw Hale aside and ran after him.

Nicole tried to follow, but Daniel collapsed.

“Dad!”

“I’m all right.”

Water rose around their boots.

Reed shouted, “The cavern is flooding!”

Nicole looked toward the hidden passage.

Nathaniel and Wexler were escaping.

Her father could barely stand.

Her mother’s condition was unknown.

She made her choice.

She lifted Daniel’s arm over her shoulder.

“We’re leaving.”

Behind them, the archive terminal displayed a final message:

TRANSFER COMPLETE.

RECIPIENT: N.T.

Nicole stopped.

The recipient was not Nathaniel.

May you like

The transfer had gone to someone else with the same initials.

Someone waiting outside the quarry.
