Chapter 9 - Choosing Each Other Again

Three months later, Maya returned to work part-time.

She designed a community center for patients who needed temporary housing near the hospital. The project gave structure to days that had once been ruled entirely by fear.

Arjun resigned from his regional position.

Maya was furious when she learned the truth.

“You said you would not destroy your career for me.”

“I didn’t.”

“You resigned.”

“I accepted a different position. Fewer countries, fewer flights and fewer excuses.”

“You loved that job.”

“I loved what I thought it proved.”

“And what does this prove?”

“That success means nothing if I cannot recognize my own life while living it.”

His new role was still demanding, but he established boundaries he had once considered impossible. He stopped answering calls during dinner. He scheduled days that belonged to no company.

Maya began trusting that his choices were truly his.

When her follow-up scans showed no visible signs of the disease, they returned to the small restaurant where Arjun had planned to celebrate his promotion months earlier.

There were no photographers, flowers or dramatic speeches.

Arjun placed a small box on the table.

Maya stared at it.

“Please don’t kneel.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

Inside the box was not a new ring.

It was their old wedding ring, repaired and polished.

“I’m not asking you to erase the divorce,” Arjun said. “I’m asking whether you want to have dinner with me tomorrow.”

Maya laughed through her tears.

“That is your proposal?”

“It is my first proposal. Tomorrow, I may ask for another dinner.”

“And after that?”

“We keep asking until one of us decides to stop.”

Maya slipped the ring onto her finger.

“Dinner tomorrow sounds good.”

It took six more months before they married again.

This time, they invited only the people who understood that their happiness had not been saved by one grand gesture.

It had been rebuilt through hundreds of small, honest choices.
