Chapter 8 - A Different Kind of Promise

The weeks that followed were not magically easy.

Maya had days when she could laugh and days when every conversation exhausted her. Arjun had moments of patience and moments when old anger returned.

Once, after Maya missed an appointment without telling him, they argued in the hospital courtyard.

“You promised not to disappear,” Arjun said.

“I needed one day when no one looked at me like a patient.”

“You could have told me.”

“I did not want to explain myself.”

“You don’t have to explain every feeling. You only have to let me know you are safe.”

The word safe silenced them both.

Maya sat on a stone bench.

“I’m afraid that if the treatment fails, your last memories of me will be hospital rooms.”

Arjun sat beside her.

“My last memories are not yours to choose.”

She looked at him, frustrated.

“You always have an answer.”

“No. I have fear. I simply stopped pretending fear should make decisions for us.”

Maya leaned her head against his shoulder.

“What if I never become the woman I was before?”

“I’m not the man I was before.”

He took her hand.

“We are not rebuilding the old marriage. That marriage had too much silence. We build something new, whether it becomes friendship, love or simply two people who survived the truth.”

Maya studied him.

“You would accept friendship?”

“No,” he admitted. “But I would respect it.”

She smiled for the first time that day.

At her next appointment, the doctor said the treatment was working.

The illness had responded better than expected.

Maya cried after hearing the news.

Arjun did not tell her everything would be fine.

May you like

He only held her and said, “Today is good.”

For once, today was enough.
