Chapter 7 - The Letters in the Blue Notebook

Elena arrived from London carrying a blue notebook.
Maya’s face changed when she saw it.
“You went to my apartment?”
“You asked me to bring your passport,” Elena replied. “The notebook was beside it.”
Arjun recognized it immediately. Maya had carried it throughout their marriage, filling it with sketches, addresses and unfinished plans.
Elena placed it on the table.
“I think you should decide what happens to this.”
After she left, Maya held the notebook against her chest.
“What is inside?” Arjun asked.
“Nothing.”
He gave her a tired smile. “You are still terrible at lying.”
Maya slowly opened the cover.
Her wedding ring rested inside a folded piece of paper.
Arjun stared at it.
“I couldn’t take it with me,” she said. “But I couldn’t leave it behind either.”
She handed him the notebook.
Letters filled nearly every page.
Arjun read about the day she received the diagnosis. He read how she had watched him celebrate his promotion while imagining his future collapsing.
He read her apologies for every cruel sentence she had spoken.
On the final page, she had written only one line.
I hope he hates me enough to be happy.
Arjun closed the notebook.
“I tried,” he said.
Maya wiped her eyes.
“Did it work?”
“No.”
He placed the ring in her palm.
“I don’t want you to wear this because we are still divorced. I want you to keep it because what we had was real, even when fear distorted it.”
Maya curled her fingers around the ring.
“I don’t know how to undo what I did.”
“We don’t undo it. We decide what it teaches us.”
“And what did it teach you?”
“That love without honesty becomes a prison built by the person who thinks they are setting someone free.”
Maya looked at him.
“And you?”
May you like
Arjun asked.
“That being needed is not the same as being burdened.”
