Chapter 13 - The Man Who Was Dead

Security pulled Jocelyn and Cassandra to the floor.

Customers scattered.

A second shot did not come.

The shooter disappeared before police reached the roof across the street.

The bullet had not been aimed at Jocelyn.

It had struck directly behind Cassandra’s chair.

A warning.

Or a failed execution.

At the hospital, Cassandra gave a full statement.

Jocelyn submitted the flash drive to investigators.

It contained photographs of letters, financial records, and audio files.

One recording featured Gordon’s voice.

“If Jocelyn reaches forty before we gain access, the trust becomes untouchable.”

Another man replied.

“Then make sure she signs the spousal restructuring agreement.”

“What if she refuses?”

“She won’t know what she’s signing.”

The voice was older.

Controlled.

Familiar in a way Jocelyn could not place.

The police enhanced the audio.

Naomi contacted Samuel Pryce.

Samuel listened once and removed his glasses.

“That sounds like Daniel Cross.”

“The missing investigator?” Jocelyn asked.

“Yes.”

“You said he disappeared.”

“He did.”

“You did not say he was dead.”

“We assumed he was.”

“Why?”

“His car was found near the Delaware River. There was blood inside.”

“No body?”

“No.”

Jocelyn paced slowly despite the pain in her abdomen.

“Why would my father’s investigator help Gordon steal the trust he was hired to protect?”

Samuel looked troubled.

“I don’t know.”

Marcus reviewed the trust documents again.

He discovered that early activation required an official finding of attempted spousal fraud.

The evidence against Gordon might trigger that clause.

On the surface, this benefited Jocelyn.

But Daniel Cross had helped create the evidence.

Naomi saw the trap first.

“If the trust activates early, control passes to Jocelyn.”

Samuel nodded.

“Correct.”

“What happens if Jocelyn dies after activation but before naming a successor?”

Samuel’s face changed.

“The trust follows the provisional succession schedule.”

“Who is listed?”

“I need to access the sealed appendix.”

The law firm retrieved it under emergency authorization.

The answer arrived an hour later.

If Jocelyn died after activation without a named beneficiary, control would pass to the foundation established by Thomas Mercer.

The Mercer Medical Advancement Foundation.

Its current executive administrator was listed as Adrian Gray.

Mr. Gray.

Naomi whispered, “Daniel Cross changed his name.”

Samuel looked sick.

“He has been inside the trust structure for years.”

Jocelyn understood.

Gordon had not been the mastermind.

He had been bait.

Cross had encouraged Gordon to commit financial fraud, knowing it would trigger early trust activation.

Then, if Jocelyn died from her untreated condition or another convenient event, the entire fortune would fall under Cross’s control.

Her ruptured artery had been natural.

But the delay in treatment could have killed her.

Cross had counted on Gordon and Rita behaving exactly as they always did.

Selfishly.

Cruelly.

Predictably.

Jocelyn turned to Naomi.

“Where is Gordon?”

“In county custody. His bail hearing is tomorrow.”

“Cross will try to silence him.”

“Or rescue him,” Naomi said.

Jocelyn looked at the audio waveform on the screen.

For the first time, she no longer saw her husband as the greatest threat.

Gordon was guilty.

But someone had spent twelve years building a machine around his greed.

And that machine was still running.
