Chapter 11 - The Marriage Contract

Jocelyn’s father, Thomas Mercer, had been a quiet man.

He owned several regional medical laboratories but avoided publicity. When he died, most people assumed Jocelyn inherited only a modest estate.

That was because Thomas had structured his assets privately.

Jocelyn knew of one trust.

It provided annual income and funded medical research.

Naomi discovered a second.

The Mercer Continuity Trust.

It had been created twenty years earlier and amended shortly before Jocelyn married Gordon.

The trust documents were held by an old law firm in Philadelphia.

Naomi arranged a video meeting with the firm’s senior partner, Samuel Pryce.

Samuel appeared on the screen with silver hair and a severe expression.

“Dr. Hale, your father instructed us not to contact you unless one of three triggering events occurred.”

“What events?”

“Your death, a direct attempt to seize trust assets, or credible evidence that your marriage was entered under fraudulent circumstances.”

Jocelyn sat completely still.

“What assets are in the trust?”

Samuel hesitated.

“The current estimated value is approximately one hundred and eighty million dollars.”

Even Naomi looked surprised.

Jocelyn stared at the screen.

“That cannot be correct.”

“It includes laboratory patents, commercial property, and a minority position in Veridian Biotech.”

“My father never told me.”

“He believed wealth attracted people who would value access more than affection.”

Gordon’s face flashed through her mind.

“Why was the trust amended before my marriage?”

Samuel opened a file.

“Your father hired an investigator.”

Jocelyn’s heartbeat accelerated.

“To investigate Gordon?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“The investigator found that Gordon had approached your father before proposing to you.”

Jocelyn’s mouth went dry.

“Approached him how?”

“He requested financial assistance for a business idea. Your father refused.”

“When was this?”

“Four months before your engagement.”

Jocelyn remembered Gordon’s proposal.

A rainy evening.

A hospital rooftop.

A ring he claimed he had saved for two years to buy.

Samuel continued.

“Your father believed Gordon’s proposal might be influenced by your expected inheritance.”

“Did he tell Gordon about the trust?”

“No. But Gordon knew your father was wealthier than he appeared.”

Naomi asked, “What activates the trust?”

“Dr. Hale receives full control at age forty, or earlier if her spouse attempts to access the protected assets.”

Jocelyn was thirty-nine.

Her birthday was seven weeks away.

“The message said once the trust activates, none of this will matter,” she said.

Samuel nodded grimly.

“Someone knows the terms.”

“Who?”

“Only your father, this firm, the trustees, and the investigator.”

“My father is dead.”

“Yes.”

“Who was the investigator?”

Samuel looked away from the camera.

“That is where the situation becomes complicated.”

“Tell me.”

“The investigator disappeared twelve years ago.”
