Chapter 8 - The Family on Its Knees

The convoy’s arrival destroyed the performance Chloe had planned.

Guests gathering outside the mansion stopped admiring the decorations and began recording the military vehicles.

Caterers whispered.

Neighbors stared.

George remained on his knees as Sarah accepted the sealed folder.

Linda cried openly.

Chloe finally stepped off the porch.

“Sarah, you can’t leave like this.”

Sarah looked at her sister.

“You told me to leave.”

“I didn’t know you were working with the military.”

“That shouldn’t have mattered.”

Chloe’s face tightened.

“We’re sisters.”

“You carried my clothes into the garage in garbage bags.”

“I was stressed.”

“You laughed when the heater broke.”

Chloe lowered her voice.

“People are watching.”

Sarah looked around at the neighbors, guests, and cameras.

“That bothered you more than watching your pregnant sister freeze.”

Ryan suddenly moved toward the house.

Two investigators stepped out of the second SUV.

“Ryan Mercer,” one called.

Ryan stopped.

The officers approached and presented identification.

“You need to come with us regarding the theft and transfer of protected defense technology.”

Chloe stared at her husband.

“What are they talking about?”

Ryan said nothing.

Sarah removed a small recording device from her suitcase.

She played Daniel’s recovered message.

His voice carried across the silent driveway.

“I think someone close to your family may have seen parts of Guardian.”

Chloe’s face crumpled.

She turned toward Ryan.

“What did you do?”

“It wasn’t supposed to hurt anyone,” he said quickly. “I sold old files. They said it was market research.”

“Daniel died.”

“I didn’t know they would target him.”

Linda gasped.

George slowly rose from his knees.

“You were responsible?”

Ryan backed away.

“No. I only gave them access. I didn’t order anything.”

The investigators escorted him toward their vehicle.

Chloe followed several steps, pleading for an explanation, but Ryan would not look at her.

When the SUV door closed, Sarah felt no triumph.

Daniel was still gone.

No arrest could restore the mornings they had lost or allow him to hold their child.

But the truth had finally stepped into daylight.

Colonel Hayes stood beside Sarah.

“The network is being shut down,” he said. “Daniel’s name will be included in the official investigation.”

Sarah nodded.

George approached carefully.

“I’m sorry.”

She looked at him.

He seemed older than he had an hour earlier.

“We didn’t understand,” he continued.

May you like

“No,” Sarah replied. “You didn’t try to understand.”

Then she entered the lead SUV.
