Chapter 5 - Daniel’s Last Warning
The breakthrough came from a voice recording hidden inside Daniel’s damaged files.
Sarah recovered it at 4:30 one morning while rain struck the garage door.
Daniel’s voice emerged through the laptop speakers, distorted but unmistakable.
“Sarah, if you’re hearing this, something happened before I could come home.”
She covered her mouth.
For months, she had dreamed of hearing his voice again. Now every word felt like both a gift and a wound.
Daniel continued.
“The compromised credentials belong to a civilian contractor. I don’t know who yet, but the access pattern connects to the Meridian logistics network.”
Sarah knew the name.
Meridian Defense Logistics supplied communications equipment to military facilities across the country. Ryan had worked for one of its subcontractors before marrying Chloe.
Daniel’s recording became weaker.
“I think someone close to your family may have seen parts of Guardian. Do not trust anyone asking about your files or insurance accounts.”
Sarah froze.
Two years earlier, during a family Christmas, she had demonstrated an early Guardian prototype to George. Ryan had been in the room. He had asked detailed questions about how the system authenticated military navigation commands.
At the time, Sarah believed he was simply interested.
Now she remembered the way he photographed her screen.
Daniel’s final words filled the freezing garage.
“Whatever happens, protect our child. And remember that you were the brilliant one long before you met me.”
The recording ended.
Sarah sat in silence as tears ran down her face.
Then she called Colonel Hayes.
Within an hour, military investigators began examining Ryan’s employment history.
They discovered that he had been dismissed from a Meridian subcontractor after unauthorized files were found on his personal computer. The company had avoided prosecution because the files appeared incomplete.
Ryan had claimed he downloaded them accidentally.
Hayes did not believe in accidents that repeated themselves.
“We need evidence linking him to Daniel’s mission,” he told Sarah.
“I can get it.”
“You are not confronting him.”
“I don’t need to.”
Sarah modified Guardian.
She created a false update file containing an invisible tracking signature. Then she left a spare drive inside her unlocked suitcase.
The bait looked valuable enough to steal.
For three nights, nothing happened.
On the fourth night, Sarah pretended to sleep while footsteps approached the garage.
The connecting door opened.
Ryan entered quietly.
He crossed the dark room, searched the suitcase, and took the drive.
Sarah remained motionless until the door closed.
Then she opened her eyes.
Guardian activated the moment Ryan connected the drive to a computer.
The signal traveled through the mansion, across an encrypted network, and into an offshore storage account connected to Meridian.
Within minutes, Sarah had the proof.
