Chapter 6 - The Offer They Never Expected
Colonel Hayes wanted Ryan arrested immediately.
Sarah asked him to wait.
“The people who bought the files will disappear if they know we found him,” she explained.
Hayes disliked the risk, but he agreed to let investigators monitor the network.
For the next two weeks, Ryan continued behaving as though nothing had happened.
He drank George’s expensive whiskey, complained about the Thanksgiving budget, and occasionally entered the garage to ask Sarah whether Daniel’s insurance payment had arrived.
Sarah answered every question calmly.
Meanwhile, Guardian mapped the entire stolen network.
The trail led to a group of private contractors who had been manipulating supply routes, selling convoy locations, and causing equipment failures that appeared accidental.
Daniel had discovered the pattern.
That was why his transport had been redirected.
Ryan had not personally ordered Daniel’s death, but the files he stole gave the contractors enough information to target the mission.
The truth devastated Sarah.
She spent one night sitting in the garage with Daniel’s photograph pressed against her chest.
She wanted to scream at Ryan.
She wanted to tell Chloe that the man sleeping beside her had helped cause Daniel’s death.
But exposing him too soon could allow the larger network to escape.
Sarah kept working.
Guardian became more than a detection program. It became a complete defense system capable of protecting military communications against false commands.
When she submitted the final design, a government review board requested an immediate private demonstration.
Hayes arranged a secure video conference.
Sarah presented Guardian from the freezing garage while her family hosted a Thanksgiving planning meeting in the mansion.
The board members saw the concrete walls behind her.
One woman asked whether Sarah was working from a storage facility.
Sarah answered simply.
“This is where I currently live.”
Two days later, the Department of Defense offered to purchase Guardian and appoint Sarah as chief civilian engineer for the program.
The contract was worth more money than Sarah’s family could have imagined.
She did not celebrate.
Her first request was that part of the funding be used to establish a support program for widowed military families facing financial or housing abuse.
Her second request was personal.
She wanted the contract announcement delivered on Thanksgiving morning.
Hayes understood immediately.
“You could leave tonight,” he said.
“No.”
“Why stay?”
Sarah looked at the mansion through the garage window.
“Because for six weeks, they have told themselves that I’m weak, dependent, and lucky they tolerate me.”
