Chapter 5 - The Man Holding the Passport

Claire sent the photograph to Rachel.

Rachel called within seconds.

“Do you know him?”

“No.”

“Don’t show your family.”

“Why?”

“Because whoever is sending these wants you to know something, but we don’t know what they want in return.”

Claire enlarged the man’s face.

He looked mid-fifties.

Gray suit.

Receding dark hair.

A scar near his left eyebrow.

He seemed familiar.

Not personally.

Professionally.

Claire searched her memory.

Then she remembered.

Six months earlier, Vanessa had brought a man to Margaret’s birthday dinner.

Not as a guest.

He had arrived near dessert.

Vanessa introduced him as “someone helping Mark with business restructuring.”

His name had been Adrian.

Or Aaron.

Claire had barely paid attention.

She called Rachel back.

“I’ve seen him.”

“Name?”

“Maybe Adrian Cole.”

Rachel typed.

“Hold.”

Thirty seconds.

Then a sharp intake of breath.

“Claire.”

“What?”

“Adrian Cole is a private finance broker.”

“Is that bad?”

“He lost his state lending license four years ago.”

“For what?”

“Document falsification and deceptive lending.”

Claire sat down.

“He’s banned from originating residential loans.”

“That doesn’t mean he stopped.”

Rachel sent a webpage screenshot.

The photograph matched.

Adrian Cole.

Claire read the disciplinary order.

False income documents.

Borrower impersonation.

Fraudulent signatures.

Suddenly the plan no longer looked amateur.

Vanessa had not simply copied a signature.

She had found someone who knew how to manufacture an entire borrower.

Claire returned to the hotel room.

Lily was drawing on a pad.

“Mommy?”

“Yes?”

“Are we going home?”

Claire looked at her.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Today.”

Lily smiled for the first time since yesterday.

That decided it.

Claire packed.

At eleven thirty, the hotel manager knocked.

His name was Samuel Reed.

Claire had learned it from his card.

“I wanted to update you before you check out.”

“Okay.”

“The disputed charges have been removed from your account pending investigation.”

“Thank you.”

“We also moved the other adults to separate billing.”

Claire almost felt sorry for the front desk employee who would have that conversation.

Almost.

Samuel continued.

“The security director reviewed more footage.”

Claire’s attention sharpened.

“Of Lily?”

“Partly.”

He held the tablet.

“At 12:52 p.m., shortly before you left for your meeting, Mrs. Collins entered the business center.”

Vanessa appeared on-screen.

She carried Claire’s leather tote.

Claire recognized it immediately.

“She took my bag?”

“She returned to the suite with it eleven minutes later.”

Claire’s throat tightened.

Her tote had contained her work laptop and wallet.

“I thought it was in my room.”

Samuel swiped.

“Fourteen minutes after that, a man entered the lobby.”

Adrian Cole.

Claire whispered, “Oh my God.”

“You know him?”

“I know who he is.”

The footage showed Adrian entering an elevator.

Another camera captured him on the executive floor.

Vanessa let him into the hotel suite.

Claire stared.

“He was here.”

Samuel nodded.

“Twenty-two minutes.”

Claire tried to think.

“What was in my bag?”

Wallet.

Company badge.

Checkbook she rarely used.

A folder containing insurance papers.

And a small flash drive.

Then she remembered.

Her house documents.

Not originals.

Scans.

She had been reviewing homeowner insurance renewals.

“Did he leave with anything?”

Samuel advanced the footage.

Adrian exited holding a large white envelope.

Claire’s stomach dropped.

“Can you preserve all of this?”

“We already have.”

“Police?”

Samuel nodded.

“Our security director contacted them because of the child endangerment concern and the possible financial fraud.”

Claire looked at Lily.

Good.

For once, someone outside the family was calling behavior what it was.

Not drama.

Not misunderstanding.

Not family business.

A police officer arrived before noon.

Claire gave a statement.

Lily spoke briefly with a specially trained female officer in Claire’s presence.

When asked who put her outside, Lily said, “Aunt Vanessa.”

When asked if anyone tried to let her back in, Lily said no.

When asked if she knocked, she nodded.

“A lot.”

Claire closed her eyes.

At twelve forty, Vanessa learned police were involved.

The hallway erupted.

“You called the cops on your own sister?”

Claire stepped out of the hotel room and closed the door so Lily would not hear.

Vanessa stormed toward her.

Mark followed.

Margaret and Robert were behind them.

Claire said, “Hotel security called.”

“You gave a statement.”

“Yes.”

“You’re going to destroy my family.”

Claire stared.

“You locked my child outside.”

“She was fine.”

“Stop saying that.”

Mark cut in.

“We made a mistake.”

Claire looked at him.

“You watched.”

Mark’s mouth closed.

“You watched Lily get pushed into that hallway.”

“I didn’t know Vanessa would leave her there.”

“The video showed you sitting down afterward.”

He had no answer.

Margaret stepped forward.

“Claire, enough.”

“No.”

“This is your sister.”

“And Lily is my daughter.”

“You’re choosing to turn this into something unforgivable.”

Claire looked at her mother.

“No. Vanessa chose that.”

Vanessa’s eyes hardened.

“You always wanted this.”

“What?”

“To be better than me.”

Claire almost laughed.

“I wanted my daughter safe.”

“No. You wanted Grandma’s house. You wanted everyone to think you were responsible. Perfect Claire. Poor little saint Claire.”

Robert said, “Vanessa.”

She ignored him.

“You think Grandma loved you more?”

Claire’s jaw tightened.

“She trusted me.”

Vanessa smiled.

Then she said something that made Margaret gasp.

“She trusted you because she didn’t know the truth about why you got the house.”

Claire stopped moving.

“What truth?”

Margaret grabbed Vanessa’s arm.

“Don’t.”

Claire looked from one to the other.

“What truth?”

Vanessa was breathing hard now.

Angry enough to be reckless.

“Ask Mom why Grandma changed the will eleven days before she died.”

Claire frowned.

“I know why.”

“No, you don’t.”

“Vanessa.”

Margaret’s voice cracked.

Vanessa pulled free.

“Ask her what Grandma found in Dad’s office.”

Robert went white.

Claire looked at him.

“What did Grandma find?”

Nobody answered.

Vanessa smiled bitterly.

“You think this started with my loan?”

Claire’s phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

May you like

One new message.

Your grandmother knew Adrian Cole too.
