Chapter 4 - The Woman With Claire’s Face

Rachel arranged a video call with the lender’s fraud department at ten.

Claire sat in the hotel business center with the door locked.

The fraud officer was a man named Daniel Perez.

Rachel joined from her office.

Daniel looked grim.

“We’ve frozen the application.”

Claire nodded.

“Thank you.”

“There are several serious inconsistencies.”

“Like someone pretending to be me?”

“Yes.”

Rachel said, “We need the identification record.”

Daniel hesitated.

“I can describe it, but I cannot release the video without authorization from legal.”

“What did the woman look like?”

Daniel checked his notes.

“Female. Approximately mid-thirties to early forties. Brown hair. Similar facial structure to the identification document.”

Claire already knew.

“Vanessa.”

Daniel continued.

“She wore glasses.”

Vanessa did not normally wear glasses.

Claire suddenly remembered Vanessa borrowing Claire’s reading glasses at Christmas.

A joke.

“You look like a librarian,” Mark had said.

Claire’s stomach turned.

“What ID did she use?”

“A driver’s license in your name.”

Claire touched her purse.

“My license is with me.”

“Was it ever missing?”

“No.”

Rachel said, “A counterfeit.”

Daniel nodded.

“Possibly.”

Claire asked, “What address?”

“My house?”

“Yes.”

“And phone?”

Daniel read the last four digits.

Claire frowned.

“Not mine.”

She searched the number.

Vanessa’s old business phone.

Rachel wrote it down.

Daniel said, “The application included recent utility statements, property tax records, income documentation and a copy of your passport.”

Claire’s blood went cold.

“My passport?”

“When did you last see it?”

Claire thought.

“Two months ago.”

“Where?”

“At home.”

Rachel said, “Does anyone have a key?”

Claire answered too slowly.

“My mother.”

Daniel stopped typing.

Rachel looked at Claire through the screen.

“And Vanessa?”

“She used to.”

“Used to?”

“I changed the locks three years ago.”

“Why?”

Claire looked away.

“Because she came into my house while I was working and took a necklace Grandma left me.”

Daniel raised his eyebrows.

Claire continued.

“She said she was borrowing it.”

Rachel stared.

“You never told me that.”

“I got it back.”

“That isn’t the point.”

Claire knew.

She had spent years solving incidents instead of seeing the pattern.

Daniel promised the application would remain frozen.

Before the call ended, he said one more thing.

“The requested loan amount is four hundred eighty thousand dollars, but the supporting documents indicate another obligation.”

“What obligation?”

“A private debt listed as the reason for consolidation.”

“How much?”

“Three hundred twelve thousand.”

Claire blinked.

“Vanessa owes three hundred thousand dollars?”

Rachel asked, “To whom?”

Daniel shook his head.

“The application only lists it as private financing.”

Claire returned upstairs.

Lily was with a hotel childcare coordinator Claire had personally verified.

Claire had refused to leave her with family again.

When the elevator opened, Robert was waiting.

“We need to talk.”

“No.”

“You’ve frozen Vanessa’s loan.”

Claire stopped.

“How do you know that?”

“She called your mother.”

“So Vanessa knows the lender froze it.”

“She’s hysterical.”

“I don’t care.”

Robert’s jaw tightened.

“You need to care. There are children involved.”

“So were there yesterday.”

“That was different.”

Claire stared at him.

“You mean because they’re Vanessa’s children.”

Robert’s face changed.

“That isn’t fair.”

“It’s exactly fair.”

“Vanessa could lose everything.”

“What did she borrow three hundred thousand dollars for?”

Robert’s eyes shifted.

There.

Another person who knew.

Claire stepped closer.

“Dad.”

“Ask her.”

“I’m asking you.”

Robert rubbed his forehead.

“Mark made investments.”

“What kind?”

“I don’t know.”

“You do.”

“I said I don’t.”

Claire studied him.

Her father had always been impatient, but he was a terrible liar.

“Did you give them money?”

“That is none of your business.”

“How much?”

Robert turned away.

Claire said, “Did you mortgage your house too?”

He stopped walking.

That was the answer.

Claire followed.

“Dad.”

“Leave it alone.”

“How much?”

He turned suddenly.

“One hundred and twenty thousand.”

Claire stared.

Robert lowered his voice.

“We were helping them through a difficult period.”

“What happened to it?”

“I don’t know.”

“Dad.”

“Mark said the investment turned.”

“What investment?”

“I said I don’t know.”

Claire felt sick.

They were not talking about a struggling family.

They were talking about a hole.

A financial hole large enough to swallow everyone near Vanessa.

“Does Mom know?”

“Yes.”

“And you were all going to use my house next?”

Robert pointed at her.

“Do not make yourself the victim.”

Claire laughed.

“I’m literally the person whose identity was stolen.”

“You inherited that house because your grandmother favored you.”

There it was.

The old resentment.

Claire whispered, “Grandma left it to me because I took care of her.”

Robert looked away.

For four years Claire had driven Evelyn Bennett to appointments.

Bought groceries.

Managed medication.

Slept in hospital chairs.

Vanessa visited when she wanted money.

Margaret complained Evelyn was stubborn.

Robert said nursing homes existed for a reason.

Grandma had remembered.

Apparently the rest of them resented Claire for it.

Robert said, “You could solve this.”

“How?”

“Let the loan go through.”

Claire stared at him.

“You are asking me to borrow four hundred eighty thousand dollars for Vanessa?”

“Temporarily.”

“No.”

“She’ll repay it.”

Claire almost smiled.

“With what?”

Robert said nothing.

Claire stepped into the elevator.

Before the doors closed, she said, “Change your hotel reservation. I’m removing my card at noon.”

Robert’s face reddened.

“You wouldn’t.”

Claire pressed the button.

“I already did.”

When the elevator doors closed, her phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

Another photograph.

This one showed Vanessa standing outside Claire’s house.

Nighttime.

Timestamp: eleven days earlier.

The same night the fake video verification had happened.

Another message appeared.

She wasn’t alone.

Then a second photograph loaded.

Margaret was beside her.

And standing between them was a man Claire did not recognize.

A man holding Claire’s passport.
