Chapter 13 - Friday at Midnight

Claire moved Lily that afternoon.

No hotel.

No relative.

Police arranged a confidential location through a victim-protection service while the threat was active.

Claire told Lily they were having a sleepover adventure.

Lily asked whether Bunny needed a secret name.

Claire almost cried.

“Yes.”

“What name?”

Claire thought.

“Captain Gray.”

Lily smiled.

“Captain Gray protects us.”

Claire hugged her.

“Yes.”

Then Claire left to help destroy the people threatening her daughter.

The flash drive from Evelyn’s box was encrypted.

A cybercrime analyst spent nine hours on it.

At 8:16 p.m. Friday, four hours before the deadline, it opened.

Thousands of files.

Accounts.

Names.

Scanned ledgers.

Audio recordings.

Company formations.

Wire instructions.

Pension statements.

Twenty years of financial crime.

The original scheme had collapsed long ago.

But the money had not disappeared.

It had moved.

Reinvested.

Transferred.

Washed through real estate.

Private lenders.

Construction companies.

One of those companies belonged to Mark.

Claire stared at the screen.

“Mark knew?”

Price said, “Maybe not at first.”

Another file showed payments from an entity called Vale Meridian Holdings to Collins Construction.

Three years.

Total:

$1.8 million.

Claire sat back.

“Mark didn’t have a struggling business.”

Rachel shook her head.

“He had a laundering vehicle.”

“Does Vanessa know?”

“We’ll ask.”

Then another name appeared.

Robert Bennett.

Consulting payments.

2018.

2019.

2020.

2021.

The old scheme had not ended in 1999.

Robert had remained connected.

Claire felt almost numb now.

“How much?”

Rachel added.

“Six hundred eighty thousand in those four years.”

Price said, “Your father lied about being out.”

Claire gave a cold laugh.

“My father lies about everything.”

At nine twelve, police detained Robert.

Margaret screamed.

Robert did not.

He simply looked at Claire.

“You have no idea what you’ve done.”

Claire stared back.

“You said that at the hotel.”

“This drive doesn’t only implicate criminals.”

“Who else?”

“Judges. City officials. Police.”

Price’s expression changed.

Robert continued.

“You think a local detective can protect Lily from this?”

Price stepped forward.

“Be very careful.”

Robert looked at Claire.

“Destroy the drive.”

Claire almost smiled.

“There are already copies.”

For the first time, Robert truly looked afraid.

“Claire.”

“Grandma planned better than you.”

Robert was taken away.

At ten, Vanessa gave police everything she knew.

At ten forty, Adrian Cole requested a deal.

At eleven fifteen, federal agents arrived.

The case expanded beyond local police.

At eleven forty-three, Rachel stood beside Claire in a secure office.

“Midnight.”

Claire looked at the clock.

“What happens if nobody sends them the drive?”

“We find out.”

At 11:59, Claire’s phone received a message.

Unknown number.

You had a choice.

At 12:00 exactly, every light in the building went out.

Backup lights activated immediately.

Federal agents moved.

Claire’s heart stopped.

“Lily.”

Price was already on the phone.

Thirty seconds.

Sixty.

Then Price looked at Claire.

“Safe location is secure.”

Claire breathed.

A second message arrived.

Not her.

Claire stared.

Then who?

Her phone rang.

Margaret.

Claire answered.

Her mother was screaming.

“They took Peter!”

Claire frowned.

“Peter Lawson?”

“He came here. He said Robert told him to bring documents. A car pulled up and they took him.”

Claire looked at Price.

Peter.

The old attorney.

The man on Grandma’s recording.

The man who knew Robert understood the scheme.

Claire asked, “Why was Peter at your house at midnight?”

Margaret sobbed.

“I don’t know.”

Claire did.

He was moving evidence.

Police rushed to the Bennett home.

They found boxes in Peter’s car.

Old financial files.

Destroy bags.

Two cans of lighter fluid.

A portable shredder.

Peter had not come to save Robert.

He had come to erase twenty years.

At 1:22 a.m., traffic cameras found the vehicle that took him.

At 2:06, federal agents located it outside an industrial warehouse.

At 2:19, they entered.

Peter Lawson was alive.

So was Mark Collins.

Three armed men were arrested.

One escaped.

The escaped man had a name.

Graham Vale.

Son of Thomas Vale.

Claire stared at the file.

“Grandma’s accountant?”

Price shook her head.

“Thomas Vale had two sons.”

“One is Graham?”

“Yes.”

“What happened to the other?”

Price turned a page.

“According to records, he died in 2001.”

“How?”

“Suicide.”

Claire read the name.

Michael Vale.

Age twenty-seven.

Financial analyst.

Then she saw one final detail.

Michael had worked for Bennett Family Holdings.

For Robert.

Claire looked up.

“Why would Graham think Grandma stole from his father if his brother worked for my father?”

Price said, “That’s what we still don’t understand.”

A federal agent entered.

“We found something on Graham’s computer.”

“What?”

“A list of targets.”

Claire’s name.

Vanessa’s.

Robert’s.

Peter’s.

Mark’s.

Margaret’s.

And one more.

Lily Bennett.

Next to Lily’s name was a word.

Not leverage.

Not hostage.

May you like

Not child.

HEIR.
