Chapter 8 - the box in storage unit 214)

Storage Unit 214 contained three things that changed the case.
The first was Daniel's laptop.
The second was Michael Reeves's camera.
The third was a baby crib still sealed in its original cardboard box.
Rachel stared at the crib longest.
It had Daniel's name on the shipping label.
Purchased twelve days before his death.
A gift for a child he was no longer certain was biologically his.
That told Rachel more about her brother than any courtroom ever could.
Detective Ellis opened the laptop with digital forensics technicians.
Samantha identified Reeves's camera.
Inside were photographs never included in the red folder.
Vanessa meeting Grant late at night.
Grant entering Daniel's garage.
Vanessa standing beside Daniel's wrecked vehicle before emergency responders arrived.
And one image taken forty-eight hours after Daniel's death.
Grant and Vanessa arguing in a cemetery.
Vanessa held something in her right hand.
A small black recorder.
Rachel stared at the photograph.
"There."
Ellis nodded.
"We finally have proof she possessed it."
Samantha stood behind them.
"My father took this."
Rachel looked at the date.
Five weeks before Michael Reeves died.
"What happened after?"
Samantha swallowed.
"He told me he was going to confront Vanessa."
Rachel turned.
"Why?"
"He thought she might cooperate if she realized Grant would sacrifice her."
"Did she?"
"I don't know."
Ellis studied another image.
"Maybe."
He held up a photograph of Vanessa entering Michael Reeves's office.
Date: nine days before Michael died.
Rachel stared.
"She went to him."
Samantha's face hardened.
"My father never told me."
"Maybe he was protecting you."
"From what?"
Ellis looked at the camera.
"Let's find out."
The memory card contained a video.
Michael Reeves had recorded his office meeting with Vanessa.
They watched.
Vanessa sat across from him.
She looked pregnant.
Tired.
Terrified.
Michael's voice came from behind the camera.
"Tell me about Daniel's car."
Vanessa shook her head.
"I can't."
"Grant won't protect you."
"He said it wasn't supposed to happen like that."
Rachel's breath caught.
Michael asked, "What was supposed to happen?"
Vanessa covered her face.
"He wanted to scare Daniel."
"How?"
"I don't know."
"Vanessa."
She looked up.
"I swear."
"Then why were you at the crash?"
"Grant called me."
"What did he say?"
"That Daniel had crashed."
"And you went."
"Yes."
"What did you take from Daniel's jacket?"
Vanessa froze.
Michael leaned closer.
"The recorder."
She started crying.
"He told me to get it."
"Grant?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't you give it to him?"
Vanessa looked directly toward the camera.
"Because I listened to it."
Rachel's hands shook.
Michael asked, "What's on it?"
"Everything."
"Meaning?"
"Daniel confronting us. Grant threatening him. Me telling Daniel I knew about the money."
"Did you help steal from the company?"
Vanessa cried harder.
"I signed things. Grant said they were temporary transfers."
"Did you know Daniel was going to die?"
"No."
"Did Grant?"
"I don't know."
Michael's voice hardened.
"That's not true."
Vanessa stared at the table.
Then she whispered.
"Daniel called me after he left the garage."
Rachel stepped closer to the screen.
"What did he say?" Michael asked.
"That something was wrong with the car."
Rachel closed her eyes.
Michael continued.
"What did you do?"
"I called Grant."
"And?"
"Grant told me to stay home."
"But you didn't."
"No."
"Why?"
"Because I knew."
"Knew what?"
Vanessa's face collapsed.
"That Grant had done something."
The room went silent.
On the recording, Michael asked the final question.
"Did you try to save Daniel?"
Vanessa shook her head.
"No."
Rachel turned away.
Margaret was not present.
Rachel was grateful.
She could not have watched her mother hear that.
Michael asked, "Why not?"
Vanessa whispered, "I was scared."
The video ended.
Samantha began crying.
"My father had it."
Ellis nodded.
"Enough to reopen Daniel's case."
"Then why didn't he go to police?"
"He probably planned to."
Rachel looked at Samantha.
"Grant found out."
A technician spoke.
"There's another video."
They opened it.
Date: the night before Michael Reeves died.
Michael spoke directly into the camera.
"If something happens to me, Grant Hale knows Vanessa came here. Vanessa has the recorder. I advised her to surrender it. She refused. She said it was the only reason Grant hadn't killed her."
Rachel's stomach turned.
Michael continued.
"She also told me the child she's carrying is Grant's."
The video shook as Michael adjusted the camera.
"One more thing. Vanessa believes Daniel changed his will. She is wrong. He died before signing it. Under the current will, if the child is legally presumed Daniel's, she controls the Carter shares as guardian until the child reaches adulthood."
Rachel frowned.
Ellis looked at the documents.
"But DNA changes that."
"Exactly."
Samantha whispered, "So she needed everyone to believe Noah was Daniel's."
Rachel nodded.
"And Grant needed the same thing."
If Grant was publicly established as Noah's biological father, the affair became undeniable.
Daniel's suspicions became more credible.
The financial investigation deepened.
The timeline tightened.
The motive strengthened.
The baby was not just a child to them.
He was evidence.
Ellis's phone rang.
He answered.
Rachel watched his expression.
"Where?"
He listened.
"We're on our way."
He hung up.
"What?" Rachel asked.
"They found Vanessa."
"Alive?"
"Yes."
"Where?"
"At the marina."
Rachel's blood ran cold.
"Grant's boat?"
Ellis nodded.
"Harbor patrol saw a woman matching her description get onto the boat forty minutes ago."
"Was Grant there?"
"They don't know."
Rachel grabbed her coat.
Ellis blocked the door.
"You're not coming."
"She's my nephew's mother."
"She's a suspect."
"She has Daniel's recorder."
"That is exactly why you're not coming."
Rachel stared at him.
Then her phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A photograph.
Vanessa.
Standing on a boat.
Her hands bound in front of her.
Behind her was Grant Hale.
The message beneath it contained five words.
BRING NOAH OR SHE DIES.
Rachel's entire body went cold.
Ellis read the screen.
Then another message appeared.
AND BRING THE BLUE BAG.
Rachel looked at him.
Grant still believed the recorder was inside it.
May you like
Which meant Vanessa no longer had control of the situation.
And Grant was willing to use a newborn to get what he wanted.
