Chapter 5 - the woman who inherited a dead man's fear)

Samantha Price arrived thirty-seven minutes later carrying a red folder and the expression of someone who had spent months expecting to be followed.

She was forty-two.

Short blond hair.

No makeup.

Brown coat despite the warm weather.

She looked at Grant before she looked at Rachel.

Grant had remained in the pediatric waiting area after refusing to leave.

Samantha stopped six feet from him.

"You."

Grant's expression barely changed.

"Do I know you?"

"You knew my father."

Rachel stood.

"Grant, go home."

He looked at her.

"Rachel."

"Go."

"I care about Noah."

"Then leave before security removes you."

Grant's jaw tightened.

He walked toward the elevator.

When the doors closed, Samantha finally exhaled.

"You shouldn't have let him see me."

"I didn't invite him."

"He knows who I am now."

"He said he didn't."

Samantha laughed bitterly.

"He lied."

Rachel led her into a family consultation room.

Margaret stayed with Noah.

The repeat toxicology test had confirmed exposure.

Doctors expected a full recovery.

Those were the only words keeping Rachel upright.

Samantha placed the red folder on the table.

"My father called me two days before he died."

Rachel sat.

"What did he say?"

"That he had made a mistake."

"What kind?"

"He agreed to investigate Grant Hale."

Rachel leaned forward.

"For Daniel?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Samantha opened the folder.

Photographs.

Bank statements.

Printed emails.

Hotel receipts.

Rachel's stomach dropped.

Grant and Vanessa.

Together.

One picture showed them entering a hotel ten months before Daniel died.

Another showed Grant's hand on Vanessa's lower back outside a restaurant.

Another showed them kissing beside a parking garage elevator.

Rachel closed her eyes.

"So they were having an affair."

"For more than a year."

"Daniel knew?"

"He suspected."

Samantha pushed another page forward.

"Then my father found money."

Hundreds of thousands of dollars transferred through shell companies connected to Hale Carter Development.

Grant had been moving company funds.

Vanessa had signed several documents as a witness.

Rachel stared.

"Daniel discovered the theft."

"He discovered enough to become dangerous."

"To Grant."

"Yes."

Rachel looked at Samantha.

"And to Vanessa?"

Samantha's face hardened.

"My father believed so."

Rachel thought about the empty prescription bottle.

The hidden recorder.

Noah.

"What happened the night Daniel died?"

Samantha reached into her bag.

She removed a sealed envelope.

"My father wrote this after Daniel's death."

Rachel opened it.

A statement.

Michael Reeves had followed Grant on the night of Daniel's crash.

Grant met Vanessa at a roadside service station approximately thirty minutes before Daniel left his office.

Grant then went to Daniel's parking garage.

Michael lost sight of him for twelve minutes.

Later, Daniel left in his vehicle.

Grant followed.

Michael followed Grant.

Heavy rain began.

Daniel's car crashed.

Grant stopped nearly half a mile away.

He did not approach the scene.

He sat in his vehicle for seven minutes.

Then drove away.

Rachel's hands started shaking.

"Why didn't your father go to police?"

"He planned to."

"What stopped him?"

"Fear."

"Then he died."

Samantha nodded.

"Hit-and-run."

"Was Grant driving?"

"We don't know."

"Vanessa?"

"We don't know."

Rachel looked at the photographs.

"Why didn't you take this to police?"

"I did."

Rachel stared.

"What?"

"Three months ago."

"And?"

"They said it was circumstantial. They reopened a preliminary review but without physical evidence connecting Grant to Daniel's car, they couldn't prove homicide."

"The recorder."

Samantha nodded.

"My father believed Daniel had one."

"What was on it?"

"I don't know."

"Then why does everyone care so much?"

"Because Daniel called my father forty minutes before the crash."

Rachel stopped.

"What did he say?"

"That he had Grant on tape."

Rachel felt the room tilt.

Samantha continued.

"Daniel had confronted Vanessa that afternoon. He recorded it. She admitted the affair. He told her he had discovered the money."

"And Grant?"

"Daniel said Grant called him afterward and threatened him."

Rachel stared at the wall.

"Where was the recorder after the crash?"

"Missing."

"Police didn't find it?"

"No."

"Who reached the hospital first?"

Samantha did not answer.

Rachel already knew.

Vanessa.

Grant had arrived fourteen minutes later.

They had told everyone they came separately.

Rachel whispered, "She took it."

"Maybe."

"She removed it from Daniel before anyone else arrived."

"Maybe."

Rachel stood.

"Then why keep it?"

Samantha looked at her.

"Insurance."

"Against Grant."

"That's what my father thought."

Rachel paced.

If Vanessa and Grant had been involved in Daniel's death, trust between them would have ended the moment Daniel stopped breathing.

Vanessa might keep the recorder not because she wanted the truth exposed, but because the truth protected her from Grant.

A weapon.

A guarantee.

Proof that could destroy them both.

Rachel stopped.

"The diaper bag."

"What?"

"Vanessa hid something in Noah's diaper bag."

Samantha's eyes narrowed.

"Did you find it?"

"No. Just the place where it was."

Rachel remembered Margaret's phone call.

Vanessa searching the bag.

She must have removed the recorder before leaving.

Unless she moved it somewhere else inside the house.

Rachel's phone rang.

Margaret.

Rachel answered.

"What?"

"Rachel, come here."

Her mother's voice shook.

Rachel ran back to Noah's room.

Margaret stood beside the bed holding a folded legal document.

"Where did you get that?"

"Inside his blanket."

Rachel took it.

It was a copy of Daniel's will.

Not the version they had seen after his death.

This one was dated four days before the crash.

Unsigned.

Draft.

A handwritten note appeared across the top.

Confirm paternity before final execution.

Rachel read it again.

Margaret whispered, "Why would he write that?"

Samantha entered behind them.

She saw the page.

Her expression changed.

"Because my father found something else."

Rachel turned.

"What?"

Samantha opened the red folder and removed one final photograph.

Vanessa.

Grant.

At a prenatal clinic.

Seven months before Daniel died.

Rachel stared.

"That doesn't prove anything."

"No."

Samantha's voice was quiet.

"But the clinic receptionist told my father Grant attended two appointments."

Margaret looked down at Noah.

Rachel felt the pieces shift.

Affair.

Pregnancy.

Paternity.

Money.

Murder.

She turned to Samantha.

"Daniel thought Noah might be Grant's child."

"Yes."

Margaret held the crib rail.

"No."

Rachel looked at Noah.

A newborn.

None of this was his fault.

He had been born into a war that started before his first breath.

Rachel whispered, "What happens to Daniel's shares if Noah isn't biologically his?"

Margaret looked at her.

Samantha answered.

"According to Daniel's existing estate documents, Vanessa temporarily controls his shares as surviving spouse until paternity of any posthumous child is confirmed."

Rachel stared.

"And if Noah isn't Daniel's?"

"The shares revert to the Carter family trust."

"Meaning Vanessa loses control."

"Yes."

Rachel's mind moved faster.

"And if Noah dies before paternity is tested?"

Samantha went silent.

Margaret whispered, "Rachel."

Samantha looked at the floor.

"Without a living child available for testing, Vanessa could delay the estate case for years."

Rachel's heart slammed.

"She wasn't trying to silence a crying baby."

No one answered.

Rachel looked at Noah.

"She was trying to erase evidence."
