THE SONS HE NEVER KNEW / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - The Ruins Beneath the Ash

Audrey refused to take the children to the laboratory.

Julian agreed.

Miriam did not.

“If Adrian has Eleanor and the original evidence, this may be our only chance.”

“He asked for the twins,” Audrey said.

“He asked you to bring them. That does not mean they must enter.”

“He wrote the warning telling me not to trust anyone.”

“Including us?”

“Including everyone.”

Elias appeared in the doorway.

“You are talking about us again.”

Audrey closed her eyes.

He walked into the room.

“Uncle Adrian wants the film.”

“How do you know?”

“The symbols point to the laboratory.”

Elias had copied the microscopic pattern onto paper.

The markings formed a coordinate sequence when placed over the original Vale building map.

The location was beneath the eastern archive corridor.

The place where Adrian had disappeared.

“You are not going,” Audrey said.

Elias looked at Julian.

“Do you agree?”

Julian hesitated.

Audrey’s anger rose.

“He is four.”

“He may be the only person who understands the pattern.”

“He is still four.”

Julian crouched beside Elias.

“Your mother is right. You are not going into that building.”

“Then you will not find the proof.”

“We will find another way.”

Elias studied him.

“You do not know another way.”

“No,” Julian admitted. “But protecting you matters more than proving I am innocent.”

Elias said nothing.

Audrey saw something shift in the child’s face.

For years, Elias had believed Julian valued secrets more than people.

Now Julian was willing to remain accused rather than risk him.

They traveled to the laboratory ruins near midnight.

The twins remained in an armored vehicle with Serena and Owen several hundred feet away.

Audrey, Julian, Miriam, and Chloe entered the fenced site.

The burned eastern wing had never been rebuilt.

Nature had grown through cracked concrete.

Adrian stood beneath the remains of the archive corridor.

Eleanor Cross was beside him.

She looked fragile but alert.

Audrey stopped when she saw her brother.

Four years of grief became too large for words.

Adrian walked toward her.

She struck him across the face.

The sound echoed through the ruins.

Then she pulled him into her arms.

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I did not remember you for almost a year.”

“You remembered later.”

“And by then Victor was watching everyone connected to you.”

“You could have found a way.”

“I tried.”

Audrey stepped back.

“You came to Serena’s house and frightened my children.”

“I needed the drive before Victor found it.”

“You could have spoken to me.”

“I did not know whether Julian had turned you.”

Julian did not defend himself.

Eleanor approached her son.

Julian looked at her as though he were seeing a ghost.

“Mother?”

She touched his face.

“I am sorry.”

He closed his eyes.

“Did Father keep you in Switzerland?”

“For years.”

“Why?”

“Because I discovered Project Gemini.”

Eleanor explained that Victor had inherited the program from his own father. It began as a private succession database created for wealthy families fearful of disputed heirs.

Victor expanded it into a network of medical surveillance and financial control.

Eleanor attempted to expose it when Julian was seventeen.

Victor had her declared medically incapable.

He isolated her and told Julian she was dying.

“The voice technology used at the laboratory was developed from recordings taken during your board meetings,” Eleanor said. “Victor created the command using your voice.”

Elias’s accusation was finally answered.

But Adrian had not brought them only for testimony.

He led them beneath the collapsed corridor to a steel hatch hidden under concrete dust.

Two biometric symbols were engraved on its surface.

The same symbols found on Elias and Noah’s records.

“The archive beneath this hatch contains the original Gemini registry,” Adrian said.

“Why can only one boy open it?” Audrey asked.

“Because Victor changed the access protocol.”

“To Elias?”

Adrian looked toward the distant vehicle.

“No.”

Audrey’s breath stopped.

“The system was changed to Noah.”
