Chapter 10 - The House That Remembered Everything
The Cross estate stood above the Hudson River behind stone walls and old trees.
Julian had grown up there.
He had not entered the house since Victor transformed it into a private corporate retreat five years earlier.
Audrey, Julian, Chloe, Miriam, and Owen Shaw approached through a service tunnel beneath the eastern garden.
Chloe had rejoined them at a train station outside the city.
Adrian’s warning remained in Audrey’s mind.
Do not trust Chloe.
But Chloe knew the archive’s location, and time was disappearing.
Owen disabled the exterior sensors.
“I designed the first security system,” he said. “Victor replaced parts of it after the laboratory fire.”
“Because you tried to stop him?” Audrey asked.
“Because I failed.”
They entered beneath the wine cellar.
A narrow corridor led to a circular steel door.
Audrey inserted Chloe’s key.
Nothing happened.
Chloe looked confused.
“It worked three months ago.”
Julian placed his hand against a brass panel beside the lock.
The system activated.
WELCOME, JULIAN CROSS.
A second message appeared.
SUCCESSOR VERIFICATION REQUIRED.
Julian turned toward Audrey.
“It wants Elias.”
“He is not here.”
“That may be why Victor registered him.”
Audrey remembered the transparent film.
She held it against the scanner.
The two symbols glowed.
The lock opened.
Beyond the door was a chamber filled with physical records, encrypted servers, medical storage cabinets, and rows of family photographs.
The Cross estate had remembered everything its owners wanted the world to forget.
Miriam began photographing documents.
Owen connected an isolated recorder to the central server.
Chloe searched Victor’s desk.
Audrey found Adrian’s file inside a cabinet marked Vale Family.
The first pages documented his investigation.
The final section contained medical reports from the Swiss facility.
Adrian had survived smoke exposure and a head injury. For months, he had been unable to remember his identity.
Victor had arranged his treatment under another name.
“He kept Adrian hidden,” Audrey whispered.
Julian stood beside her.
“Why?”
A handwritten report answered.
SUBJECT RETAINS PARTIAL MEMORY OF GEMINI INDEX.
POTENTIAL ASSET IF CONDITIONED CORRECTLY.
Audrey closed the file.
“He turned my brother into an asset.”
A sound came from the doorway.
Chloe had dropped a photograph.
It showed a woman seated beside a window at the Swiss facility.
Julian’s mother.
The image had been taken eleven months earlier.
Julian picked it up.
“She is alive.”
On the back, someone had written:
ELEANOR CROSS
SUBJECT ZERO
Miriam found the original trust amendments. Victor had forged Audrey’s and Julian’s signatures, registered Elias, and created medical evidence claiming Audrey was psychologically unstable.
“He planned to challenge your custody,” Miriam said. “Once he controlled Elias, he could control the trust.”
“What about Noah?” Audrey asked.
Chloe went still.
Audrey noticed.
“What do you know?”
Chloe backed toward the desk.
“Victor did not believe Noah was eligible.”
“For what?”
“The succession program.”
“They are twins.”
“Not according to the files.”
Julian’s face hardened.
“What are you saying?”
Before Chloe could answer, the steel door closed behind them.
Victor’s voice came through the ceiling speakers.
“I warned you not to bring the drive here.”
Red lights activated along the walls.
Owen ran to the control panel.
“The system is sealing the archive.”
Victor continued.
“Julian, you have always mistaken defiance for independence.”
“Release the door,” Julian said.
“I will, after Audrey returns what her brother stole.”
Audrey held up the transparent film.
“You mean this?”
“No. The film is only a map.”
“To what?”
“To the children selected before the Gemini program was buried.”
Chloe looked toward the ventilation shafts.
Smoke began entering the room.
Audrey covered her mouth.
Julian pulled a metal cabinet away from the wall, revealing an emergency opening.
Victor’s voice remained calm.
“You should have left Elias where he belonged.”
Audrey moved toward the opening.
