Chapter 11 - What Chloe Changed

They escaped through the maintenance shaft seconds before the archive’s fire-suppression system released a suffocating chemical cloud.
No flames appeared.
Victor did not intend to destroy the records.
He intended to force them out.
Owen led them through an underground drainage passage that emerged near the river.
Audrey seized Chloe’s arm as soon as they reached open air.
“What did Victor mean about Noah?”
Chloe’s face was streaked with dirt and tears.
“I changed a medical file.”
“Whose?”
“Noah’s.”
Julian stepped between them.
“Why?”
“Because Victor was monitoring both pregnancies through the Cross clinic. When the hospital records were created, he ordered genetic testing from samples taken at birth.”
“That never happened,” Audrey said.
“It happened without Serena’s knowledge. A temporary nurse collected the samples.”
Serena had once mentioned that a nurse disappeared before completing her first shift.
Chloe continued.
“Both boys were identified as Julian’s biological sons. Both qualified as direct successors.”
“Then why change Noah’s file?”
“To protect him.”
Audrey stared at her.
“By claiming he was not Julian’s?”
“Victor needed only one heir. If two existed, he would control both. I changed Noah’s blood record so Victor would believe only Elias carried the Cross line.”
“You chose which of my sons he would target.”
“I could only protect one.”
“You could have warned me.”
“I did not know where you were.”
“You found me three months ago.”
“And Victor was watching every message I sent.”
Audrey wanted to hate Chloe completely.
But Chloe had spent four years inside Victor’s reach, making compromises that saved one child while endangering another.
It was not forgiveness.
But the truth was rarely as simple as Audrey wanted it to be.
Miriam checked the copied evidence.
They had enough to prove fraud, illegal medical surveillance, and trust manipulation.
But Owen’s recording of the archive was incomplete.
Victor’s most damaging files remained on the central server.
Julian looked at the Cross estate above them.
“I can force a board vote.”
“Victor controls the board,” Miriam said.
“Not if the board learns he forged succession documents and falsified medical records.”
“He will deny everything.”
“Then we make the evidence public.”
Audrey shook her head.
“The Gemini files contain children’s medical histories.”
“We release only our records.”
“Victor will claim they were fabricated.”
Chloe wiped her face.
“There is one person whose testimony he cannot dismiss.”
“Eleanor,” Julian said.
Chloe nodded.
Julian looked at the photograph of his mother.
“Where is she?”
“Victor moved her from Switzerland three weeks ago.”
“Where?”
“I do not know.”
Audrey remembered Adrian’s note.
Julian’s mother is alive.
Adrian had found her.
“He knows,” Audrey said.
Miriam tried Adrian’s old emergency channel.
No response.
They returned to the secure property shortly before sunrise.
Audrey rushed inside.
The children were asleep in the upstairs bedroom.
Serena sat beside them.
“No one came near the house,” she said.
Julian remained outside the room.
Audrey noticed.
“You can enter.”
“I don’t want to frighten them.”
“You already exist in their lives, whether you enter or not.”
Julian stepped inside.
Noah woke first.
He sat up, rubbing his eyes.
“Are you the company man?”
Julian looked at Audrey.
Apparently Elias had described him.
“My name is Julian.”
Noah studied him.
“You have Elias’s face.”
Julian smiled faintly.
“So I have been told.”
“Are you our dad?”
The question entered the room without warning.
Audrey did not answer for him.
Julian sat on the floor beside the bed.
“Yes.”
“Where were you?”
Julian glanced at Audrey again.
This time she looked away.
“I did not know where you were,” he said.
“Mom knew.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t she tell you?”
“Because she believed I was dangerous.”
“Are you?”
Julian considered the question carefully.
“I trusted dangerous people. Sometimes that can hurt others almost as much as being dangerous yourself.”
Noah seemed to accept this.
Elias opened his eyes.
He had been awake the entire time.
“You still need to prove the voice was copied,” he said.
Julian nodded.
“I know.”
Elias reached beneath his pillow and removed the emergency phone.
“There is a message.”
Audrey took it.
A video had arrived from Miriam’s missing secure account.
Adrian appeared on-screen.
He stood beside an elderly woman with Julian’s eyes.
Eleanor Cross.
Adrian looked directly into the camera.
“Victor knows you entered the archive. Do not go to the police. Do not go to the board.”
He glanced toward someone outside the frame.
“Bring Julian and the twins to the Vale laboratory ruins at midnight.”
Audrey’s grip tightened.
May you like
Adrian finished with a warning.
“Only one of the boys can open what is buried there.”
