Chapter 4 - The Child Beneath the Chapel Floor

Blackthorn security sealed the estate within minutes.
Cars blocked the coastal highway. Drones flew above the cliffs. Adrian summoned police commanders, private investigators, and men who arrived without uniforms but carried weapons beneath their coats.
Vanessa performed terror beautifully.
She stood near the drawing room windows, one hand pressed to her mouth, whispering Julian’s name whenever someone entered.
Elena watched her.
There were no tears.
Adrian ordered Elena to remain at the manor.
“You think I had something to do with this?” she asked.
“I think whoever took Julian may contact you.”
“Why?”
“Because he was talking about you.”
“You believe him now?”
“I believe my son is missing.”
Elena hated him for the distinction.
Two hours passed.
Then three.
The damaged car had been found near a sharp curve half a mile from the estate. The driver had a head injury and no memory of the impact. There was no blood in the back seat. No sign Julian had fallen into the sea.
At sunset, Elena returned to the servants’ corridor where she had first met him.
The repaired wooden horse was missing from her room.
She found one of its new wheels on the floor near the staircase.
Another lay ten feet away.
She followed them.
A third wheel rested beside a door leading to the old gardens.
Julian was leaving a trail.
Outside, rain had softened into mist. Elena crossed the hedges, following tiny marks in the mud. They led beyond the greenhouse toward a stone chapel abandoned since Adrian’s grandfather’s funeral.
The chapel door was locked.
The brass key stamped 317 fit the lock.
Elena entered.
Dust floated in the fading light. White sheets covered the pews. A cracked stained-glass window cast red and blue shadows across the floor.
“Julian?”
Silence.
Then three soft knocks came from beneath the altar.
Elena moved aside a carpet and found an iron ring set into the stone. She pulled.
A trapdoor opened.
Julian crouched in the darkness below, clutching the wooden horse.
“Elena.”
She climbed down and gathered him into her arms.
He shook uncontrollably.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Who brought you here?”
“A man with a scar.”
“Did you know him?”
“He works for Mommy.”
Footsteps sounded above.
Elena froze.
The chapel door opened.
She lowered the trapdoor carefully, leaving only a narrow gap.
Voices entered.
Vanessa.
And a man.
“You were supposed to take him to the marina,” Vanessa hissed.
“He escaped the car before I reached the road.”
“You let a six-year-old escape?”
“He bit me.”
Elena covered Julian’s mouth gently.
“What happens if Blackthorn finds the boy?” the man asked.
“He won’t.”
“You said the maid was leaving.”
“She was. Then Adrian came home.”
The man paced above them.
“This is getting worse. The hospital bracelet is gone. The photograph is gone. Harrow is nervous.”
“Harrow has been nervous for seven years.”
“And Elena?”
Vanessa’s heels stopped directly over the trapdoor.
“Elena should have died the first time.”
Julian trembled harder.
Elena held him close.
“What about the DNA file?” the man asked.
“I moved it.”
“Where?”
“To the ballroom vault.”
“Your husband doesn’t know there is a vault?”
“My husband doesn’t know half the rooms in his own house.”
The man laughed softly.
“What if the child remembers more?”
Vanessa’s answer was cold.
“Then we make certain he never speaks again.”
The chapel door closed.
Elena waited until the footsteps disappeared.
Julian began to cry silently against her shoulder.
She wanted to carry him directly to Adrian. She wanted to expose Vanessa before every investigator in the house.
But Vanessa had mentioned a DNA file.
A file hidden in a ballroom vault.
Accusations could be denied.
Evidence could not.
Elena lifted Julian from the cellar.
“Listen to me,” she whispered. “We have to pretend you were hiding here by yourself.”
His eyes widened.
“Why?”
“Because your mother is watching everyone.”
“She isn’t my mother.”
Elena’s heart twisted.
“We don’t know that yet.”
“I know.”
“How?”
Julian reached into his pocket.
He removed a small digital recorder.
“The man with the scar dropped this.”
Elena pressed play.
Static crackled.
Then Vanessa’s voice filled the empty chapel.
“Once Adrian signs the guardianship amendment, Julian no longer matters. The trust will pass through me.”
A man replied, “And if Elena comes back?”
“She already did.”

There was a pause.
Then Vanessa said, “This time, make sure she stays dead.”
