Chapter 12 - The Coffin Beneath Her Name

They reached Saint Matthew’s Cemetery shortly before midnight.

Fog covered the graves. Bare branches moved above the stone walls. Adrian’s security team surrounded the area from a distance, hidden among trees and parked vehicles.

Vale had demanded Evelyn come alone.

Evelyn walked toward the Blackthorn mausoleum wearing a transmitter.

Elena and Adrian watched from a van across the road.

No one appeared.

At twelve fifteen, Evelyn’s voice came through the speaker.

“He isn’t here.”

A bell rang somewhere in the cemetery.

Then every light went out.

Adrian swore and reached for the door.

Elena caught his arm.

“Wait.”

A new message arrived on her phone.

Wrong grave.

She understood.

“My grave,” she said.

They ran through the cemetery.

Elena’s headstone stood in the oldest section beneath a cypress tree. Fresh earth surrounded it.

The coffin had already been uncovered.

Its lid lay open.

Inside was not a body.

Files filled the coffin.

Hundreds of birth certificates, medical records, photographs, and blood samples packed in waterproof containers.

Evelyn stood beside it.

“Richard hid the registry here,” she said.

“In my grave,” Elena whispered.

“He believed no one would question a dead woman.”

Adrian lifted one file.

The name on it belonged to a famous senator’s adopted son.

Another belonged to the daughter of a royal family.

Another listed a child declared dead during a prison birth.

“This could destroy governments,” Adrian said.

“It can destroy families too,” Evelyn answered.

A gun clicked behind them.

Dr. Vale stood among the graves.

Two armed men accompanied him.

Isabel was not there.

Elena stepped forward.

“Where is my daughter?”

“Safe.”

“Bring her to me.”

“Give me the registry.”

“No.”

Vale smiled sadly.

“You think these papers will return what was stolen?”

“They will expose everyone involved.”

“Including Adrian’s father. Including Vanessa. Including Evelyn.”

“Good.”

“Including your mother.”

Elena froze.

“My mother tried to expose them.”

“Your mother also helped move three infants.”

Mateo’s voice came through Elena’s earpiece from the surveillance van.

“He may be lying.”

Vale heard the faint sound and laughed.

“Your brother is listening. Adrian’s men surround us. Did you believe I came without preparation?”

Red lights appeared across nearby headstones.

Explosives.

Adrian moved toward Elena.

Vale raised his gun.

“Stay where you are.”

“You detonate those,” Adrian said, “and the registry burns.”

“I don’t need the paper copies. I need Evelyn’s key.”

Evelyn held up the silver key.

“What does it open?” Adrian asked.

“The primary laboratory beneath the original Haven House,” Vale said. “The place your mother pretended she could never find.”

Adrian looked at Evelyn.

“You knew?”

“I knew there was a lower level. I never entered it.”

Vale extended his hand.

“The key.”

Evelyn gave it to him.

Elena stared at her.

“You surrendered it?”

“I am buying time.”

“For whom?”

A small figure moved behind a headstone.

Isabel.

The girl ran toward Elena.

“Mom!”

Gunfire exploded.

Adrian pulled Elena down.

Evelyn struck Vale’s arm. His shot went wide. Security officers emerged from the fog.

Vale’s men fired toward the mausoleum.

Elena crawled behind the stone coffin and reached for Isabel.

The girl was only a few feet away.

“Come to me!”

Isabel ran faster.

One of Vale’s men seized her from behind.

Elena screamed.

Adrian fired.

The man dropped, releasing the child.

Isabel fell.

Elena reached her and pulled her behind the grave.

For the first time, she saw her daughter’s entire face.

The girl had Elena’s mouth.

Adrian’s dark lashes.

And terror far too old for her age.

“Elena,” Isabel whispered.

“Yes.”

“Dr. Vale said you forgot me.”

“I never knew they took you.”

“You didn’t leave?”

“Never.”

The girl threw her arms around her.

A violent blast shook the ground.

One of the explosives detonated near the mausoleum entrance.

Stone fragments rained across the graves.

When the smoke cleared, Vale was gone.

Evelyn lay wounded beside the coffin.

Adrian pressed his hands against her bleeding side.

“Stay with me.”

Evelyn smiled weakly.

“You sound like you did when you were small.”

“Don’t.”

“I am sorry.”

“You can apologize when you survive.”

Elena carried Isabel toward the ambulance.

The girl clung to her.

Behind them, officers secured the registry.

For the first time, Elena believed they might win.

Then Isabel whispered into her ear.

“Vanessa told Dr. Vale to let me escape.”

Elena stopped.

“What?”

“She wants me here.”

“Why?”

May you like

Isabel looked toward Blackthorn Manor in the distance.

“Because the birthday cake is a door.”
