Chapter 13 - The Birthday Built as a Trap

Adrian wanted to cancel Julian’s birthday celebration.

Elena agreed.

His board did not.

The annual event was not merely a child’s party. It was a public demonstration of succession, attended by investors, political allies, relatives, and journalists. Canceling it after rumors of Vanessa’s disappearance would signal instability.

Adrian argued until his lawyers reminded him that the trust council would meet during the celebration.

If Adrian failed to present Julian as the acknowledged heir, temporary control of Blackthorn Holdings could pass to Vanessa under the existing guardianship arrangement.

“She may be legally dead by then,” Elena said.

“The body in the car was not hers,” Adrian replied.

“Then she is a fugitive.”

“Not publicly. The police have not named her as a suspect.”

“You have recordings.”

“Recordings her lawyers will call manipulated.”

“And the DNA test?”

“It proves Julian is ours. It does not prove Vanessa kidnapped him.”

Elena looked toward the ballroom.

Workers were rebuilding the grand cake platform damaged during the attack. The birthday cake itself would arrive the following morning.

Isabel had said the cake was a door.

Elena questioned her gently.

“Vanessa showed me pictures,” the girl explained. “She said the white flowers hide the lock. She said when everyone watches Julian, the floor will open.”

“What is beneath it?”

“The place where families sign.”

Adrian examined the hidden vault under the cake platform. It contained files, but no door.

Then an architect discovered a second mechanism beneath the marble.

A platform lift descended to an underground chamber large enough to hold fifty people.

Inside stood a long black table.

At each seat lay a folder bearing the name of a wealthy family.

Adrian opened one.

It contained a contract for a private adoption arranged through Haven House.

Another held genetic reports.

Another listed payments made to judges, doctors, and hospital officials.

The chamber was not merely an archive.

It was a marketplace.

Mrs. Harrow found an old schedule in the wall safe.

The Blackthorn family had used major parties as cover for secret meetings below the ballroom. While guests danced upstairs, selected buyers entered through the cake platform.

“Vanessa plans to hold another meeting during Julian’s birthday,” Elena said.

“Why?” Mateo asked. “The registry has already been found.”

Adrian looked at the contracts.

“Because these families will pay anything to keep their names hidden.”

“She’s extorting them,” Elena said.

“Or gathering allies.”

Evelyn recovered from surgery but remained in guarded care. Before losing consciousness, she had warned Adrian that the trust council contained at least two Haven House clients.

They could remove him if Vanessa controlled enough votes.

Adrian made his decision.

“The party continues.”

Elena stared at him.

“You want Julian in a ballroom full of people who bought children?”

“I want Vanessa to believe her plan is working.”

“You are using him as bait.”

“No. Julian will be removed before the council meeting.”

“He will know.”

“I will explain it.”

“He is six. There is no explanation for placing him inside another trap.”

Adrian’s face tightened.

“Then offer a better plan.”

“Expose everything now.”

“And watch every person in those files obtain injunctions, destroy evidence, and flee?”

“At least Julian is safe.”

“Until Vanessa comes for him again.”

Elena hated that he was right.

They agreed to continue the party under strict conditions.

Julian and Isabel would remain with Elena at all times.

Adrian’s agents would disguise themselves as staff and guests.

The underground chamber would be monitored.

No real cake knife, glass bottle, or unchecked package would enter the ballroom.

Mateo designed a digital backup system that transmitted every camera feed to several outside servers.

“You have become useful,” Elena told him.

“I was always useful. You were distracted by my charm.”

The morning of the party, Julian stood before a mirror in his blue velvet jacket.

Elena adjusted his collar.

“Are you frightened?”

“Yes.”

“We can leave.”

“Daddy says running makes bad people think they won.”

“Your father says many dramatic things.”

Julian smiled.

Then his expression became serious.

“Will everyone know you’re my mother?”

“After tonight, yes.”

“Will they stop calling you the maid?”

“That does not matter.”

“It matters to me.”

He touched her cheek gently, as if remembering the slap that had not yet happened.

“I want you beside me when I cut the cake.”

Elena kissed his forehead.

“I will be there.”

Isabel entered in a pale blue dress.

She held a sealed envelope.

“This was outside my room.”

Adrian opened it.

Inside was a single silver earring.

Vanessa’s.

A note read:

Tonight Julian chooses his mother.

Below the words was a photograph of Elena asleep in her room.

The image had been taken that morning.

Vanessa was already inside the manor.
