Chapter 9 - what lily saw behind the roses)

Adults often forget children notice doors.
They notice where people disappear.
They notice which voices become quiet when they enter rooms.
They notice keys.
They notice boxes.
And because adults assume children understand nothing, they sometimes reveal everything in front of them.
Lily pointed toward the upper garden.
"Miss Vanessa put a key in the angel."
Arthur frowned.
"What angel?"
"The stone lady."
Mara knew immediately.
Eleanor's memorial garden.
A marble statue stood beneath an arch of roses, commissioned after Arthur's wife died.
Lily pulled Mara's hand.
"I saw her."
"When?"
"Before pictures."
Vanessa shouted, "She's lying!"
Lily flinched.
Arthur turned.
"Quiet."
Vanessa looked stunned.
Arthur had never spoken to her that way in public.
Mara lifted Lily into her arms.
Her prosthetic socket hurt from the fall, but she ignored it.
"Show me."
The guests watched as Arthur, Mara, Claire, Nathan, and several security officers followed Lily through the garden.
Grant and Vanessa were ordered to remain behind.
Neither listened.
They followed too.
At Eleanor's memorial, Lily pointed toward the statue.
"There."
A marble angel held a stone book against its chest.
Mara inspected it.
Nothing.
Arthur stepped closer.
"I've walked past this a thousand times."
Lily pointed lower.
"Her shoe."
Near the statue's base was a narrow metal plate nearly invisible beneath ivy.
Arthur removed the plants.
A small keyhole appeared.
Everyone looked at Mara.
She inserted the silver key.
Turned.
A hidden panel released.
Inside was a weatherproof metal compartment.
Claire whispered, "My God."
Mara pulled it open.
A small flash drive lay inside.
Nothing else.
Vanessa stopped several feet away.
Her face told Mara this was what she had been afraid of.
Arthur reached for the drive.
Mara closed her fist around it.
"No."
Arthur looked surprised.
"I need to know what's on it."
"So do I."
"This is my house."
"And my name was used to steal eleven million dollars."
Arthur slowly lowered his hand.
"You're right."
Grant stepped forward.
"Give it to Dad."
Mara turned.
"No."
"You have no idea what that contains."
"Exactly."
Grant smiled coldly.
"You always wanted revenge."
"No. I wanted peace."
"You could have had it."
"I tried."
"You dragged Lily here into family business."
Mara laughed.
"You invited her."
"To my wedding."
"Then maybe you should have told your sister not to tie her to furniture."
Grant's face reddened.
Claire stepped forward.
"There is no wedding."
Everyone went silent.
Grant stared at her.
"What?"
Claire removed her veil.
She folded it once.
Then handed it to the wedding coordinator.
"I said there is no wedding."
Grant's expression changed from disbelief to rage.
"You are humiliating me."
Claire stared at him.
"Your daughter was tied to a railing. A woman may have been kidnapped. There are forged documents using your ex-wife's name. Your mother left a recording implicating you and Vanessa. And your response is that you're humiliated."
"Claire."
"No."
"You don't walk away from me in front of everyone."
She stepped closer.
"Watch me."
A few guests gasped.
Grant caught her wrist.
Mara moved immediately.
So did Arthur.
Claire pulled free before either reached them.
"Touch me again and I call the police."
Grant smiled.
"They're already probably coming because half these idiots are filming."
Claire's face became calm.
"Good."
Grant realized too late what he had said.
Mara stared.
"Why would police coming worry you?"
"It doesn't."
"Then stop trying to stop us from opening the drive."
Nathan took out his laptop.
"I can check it offline."
Vanessa moved suddenly.
She grabbed a champagne bottle from a passing tray.
Before anyone understood what she intended, she swung it toward Nathan's laptop.
Arthur's security guard caught her arm.
The bottle fell and shattered.
Guests screamed.
Vanessa fought him.
"Let me go!"
Arthur stared at his daughter.
"Enough."
"Dad, you don't understand."
"Then explain."
"You can't open that file."
"Why?"
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
Not theatrical tears.
Real ones.
For the first time, Mara saw fear deeper than self-preservation.
Vanessa looked at Arthur.
"Because Mom wasn't trying to expose Grant."
May you like
Arthur's face went still.
Vanessa whispered, "She was trying to expose you."
