Chapter 10 - the secret eleanor kept from arthur)

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Arthur looked at his daughter as if she had begun speaking another language.

"Me?"

Vanessa nodded.

Grant turned toward her.

"What are you doing?"

She ignored him.

Arthur stepped closer.

"What did your mother think I had done?"

Vanessa laughed through tears.

"You really don't know."

"Know what?"

"The foundation wasn't losing money."

Arthur frowned.

"We verified the transfers."

"Money was moving, yes."

"Eleven million dollars."

"But it wasn't being stolen."

Grant said sharply, "Vanessa."

She spun toward him.

"It's over."

"Stop talking."

"No."

Grant moved toward her.

Security blocked him.

Vanessa looked at Mara.

"You want the truth? Fine."

Mara waited.

Vanessa pointed toward the flash drive.

"Open it."

Nathan connected the drive.

One encrypted folder appeared.

A password box opened.

Arthur whispered, "Eleanor."

He typed his wife's name.

Wrong password.

Claire tried Lily's birth date.

Wrong.

Mara stared at the screen.

Then she thought of the message hidden in the cabinet.

For Mara, if they lie.

She typed Mara.

Access granted.

Grant closed his eyes.

The folder contained dozens of files.

Bank transfers.

Audio recordings.

Scanned letters.

Medical records.

And one video.

Dated four days before Eleanor died.

Nathan opened it.

Eleanor appeared on screen.

Thin.

Pale.

Sitting in the same memorial garden before the statue had been built.

"If this file has been opened," she began, "then my children did not tell Arthur the truth."

Arthur staggered backward.

Vanessa began crying.

Eleanor continued.

"Arthur, I am sorry."

Mara felt Claire move beside her.

"I discovered the transfers while searching for money Grant and Vanessa had hidden. At first, I believed they were stealing from the foundation."

Grant stared at the ground.

"They were not."

Arthur looked confused.

Eleanor coughed.

"The accounts belong to people we harmed."

Arthur whispered, "What people?"

The video continued.

"Twenty-seven years ago, Mercer Industries operated a manufacturing plant outside Bellhaven. A chemical leak contaminated groundwater around three residential streets."

Arthur went white.

Mara had heard of Bellhaven.

Everyone in the state had.

A cluster of cancer cases.

Birth defects.

Families suing different companies for years without proving the source.

Eleanor continued.

"Arthur did not know the contamination was ongoing. His executives concealed it from him. When he discovered the truth, he ordered the plant closed."

Arthur whispered, "Yes."

"But Arthur made one terrible decision afterward."

His eyes closed.

"He agreed to a confidential settlement designed to prevent the Mercer name from being connected publicly to the contamination."

Claire stared at him.

Arthur looked sick.

Eleanor continued.

"He believed he was protecting thousands of employees from losing their jobs. Perhaps he believed silence was mercy. It was not."

Mara watched Arthur collapse into a chair.

"The eleven million dollars was my money," Eleanor said. "I began quietly compensating families who were excluded from the original settlement."

Arthur looked at the screen.

"Eleanor..."

"I used shell companies because Arthur's legal team would have stopped me."

Mara looked at Vanessa.

"So why use my name?"

Vanessa wiped her face.

"Mom didn't."

Mara turned toward the video.

Eleanor continued.

"When I became ill, Vanessa discovered what I was doing."

Vanessa sobbed.

"I asked her to help."

Arthur looked at his daughter.

Vanessa whispered, "I did."

Grant snapped, "Tell all of it."

Vanessa turned.

"You were the one who changed the company name."

Mara's blood chilled.

Grant said nothing.

Vanessa looked at Mara.

"Grant took control after Mom died."

"Why?"

"He said Dad would eventually discover the transfers. He needed someone outside the family to blame."

Mara understood before Vanessa finished.

"Me."

Vanessa nodded.

Grant laughed bitterly.

"You're putting everything on me now?"

Vanessa turned on him.

"You created Ellis Consulting."

"You signed the documents."

"Because you told me Dad would send us both to prison if he learned what Mom had been doing."

"You knew exactly what you were signing."

"You said Mara had agreed."

Mara stared at them.

"My signature."

Vanessa's voice broke.

"Grant copied it."

Arthur stood.

His face was filled with fury.

"You framed your wife."

Grant stepped backward.

"For transfers that weren't even theft."

"You didn't know that."

Grant did not answer.

Arthur's voice rose.

"You believed eleven million dollars was missing and decided to blame Mara."

"She was leaving me."

Mara froze.

Arthur stared.

"What?"

Grant looked at Mara.

"You had met with a divorce attorney."

Mara remembered.

One week before the crash.

A private consultation.

She had told nobody.

Or thought she had told nobody.

Grant continued.

"You were planning to take Lily."

"I was planning to protect her."

"You were planning to destroy my life."

"So you destroyed mine first?"

Grant's face hardened.

"I didn't cause the crash."

Nathan said, "You were driving."

"That doesn't mean I caused it."

Mara stepped closer.

"What happened that night?"

Grant looked at her.

Nothing.

Mara's voice trembled.

"What happened?"

Grant smiled faintly.

"You really still don't remember."

Vanessa whispered, "Grant, don't."

Mara stared at him.

"What am I supposed to remember?"

Grant looked toward the crowd gathering beyond the garden.

Then back at Mara.

"You didn't lose your leg because I lost control."

Mara felt cold spread through her chest.

May you like

Grant continued.

"You lost your leg because someone followed us."
