Chapter 9 - Barn 23

Barn 23 stood at the edge of an abandoned auction yard thirty miles north of the ranch. Rusted gates leaned into weeds. Empty pens stretched beneath broken floodlights. The main roof had partially collapsed after a storm.

Boone approached from the west with four ranch security men. Rook coordinated with federal agents from an unmarked vehicle. Silas and Adrian entered through the loading passage.

Adrian carried a leather portfolio containing copies of the trust documents.

“You understand,” Silas whispered, “if you betray us, there is nowhere you can go that Victor hasn’t already considered.”

Adrian’s face was pale. “I know.”

“That wasn’t a threat.”

“I know that too.”

They reached the interior pens.

A man stepped from behind a gate with a rifle. Adrian raised his hands.

“It’s me,” he said. “Victor sent for the documents.”

The guard lowered the weapon slightly. “You were told to wait for the wedding.”

“The old man panicked. I brought what we need.”

Silas emerged behind him.

The guard lifted the rifle.

Adrian moved first, knocking the barrel aside. The shot struck the roof. Silas drove his shoulder into the guard while Adrian seized the weapon. They hit the ground among dust and old straw.

Two more men appeared on the upper walkway.

Rook’s agents entered from both ends.

Shouts echoed. A flash grenade exploded near the pens. Boone’s men cut the power to the rear gate, trapping a van attempting to escape.

Silas found Mara in an office behind the auction platform. Her wrists were bound, but she had already loosened one knot using a broken piece of metal.

“You took your time,” she said.

He cut her free.

“Are you hurt?”

“My pride is devastated.”

A masked kidnapper lay unconscious near the desk. Mara had struck him with the chair after the gunfire began.

Rook entered. “We have four in custody. One escaped through a drainage culvert.”

“Victor?” Silas asked.

“Not here.”

On the office wall hung maps of Vale Crown Ranch. Red markings covered the family cemetery, the old bridge, the river fork, and the stone crown above the main gate.

They had been searching every possible interpretation of Matthew’s clue.

Mara opened a metal cabinet.

Inside were surveillance photographs of Silas, Elena, Boone, Rook, and several federal agents. There were also photographs of judges, state officials, executives, and law-enforcement officers.

Victor’s network was larger than they thought.

Adrian searched the desk and found a black phone.

It contained one message.

YOU CHOSE HER.

Adrian stared at it.

A second message appeared.

NOW WATCH WHAT SHE COSTS YOU.

Silas’s phone rang.

The ranch.

Boone answered through the radio at the same moment, listening to a report from his deputy at Vale Crown. His face changed.

“What?” Silas demanded.

Boone lowered the radio. “Fire at the veterinary center.”

Elena’s rescue facility stood less than a mile from the main barns. It housed injured horses, abandoned dogs, and several large-animal treatment stalls.

Elena had returned there after dawn.

Silas ran.

By the time they reached the ranch, smoke rose above the cottonwoods.

Fire crews battled flames along the veterinary center’s eastern wing. Staff led frightened horses into the paddocks. Elena stood near an ambulance with soot across her wedding rehearsal clothes, holding a coughing ranch hand upright.

Silas reached her.

“I’m fine,” she said before he could ask.

“What happened?”

“Someone locked the medicine storage room and started the fire in two places. We got everyone out.”

Adrian approached.

Elena looked at him but did not move closer.

A firefighter carried out a burned wooden box discovered beneath the office floor. The lid bore the Vale Crown emblem.

Silas opened it carefully.

Inside was a cassette tape protected by a metal case and a photograph of Matthew Vale standing beside Victor Cross near the river fork.

On the back, Matthew had written:

THE CROWN IS NOT A PLACE. IT IS A PERSON.

Beneath the sentence was a name.

May you like

REBECCA.

Silas’s late wife.
