Chapter 11 - The Rehearsal Dinner

The decision to continue the wedding divided them.
Federal agents wanted to cancel the public event and move everyone to protective custody. Mara agreed. Boone threatened to lock the gates himself.
Silas refused.
“Victor and Harlan know we found the numbers,” he said. “They have the names. Each side holds half. The wedding remains the exchange point.”
Elena stood by the fireplace, still wearing soot-stained clothes from the fire. “They expect Dad to bring the trust documents. We expect them to bring the ledger.”
“They may bring a bullet,” Boone said.
“They already tried fire,” Elena replied.
Adrian had been silent for most of the discussion.
Finally, he said, “They’ll use me to create the confrontation.”
Everyone looked at him.
“The slap,” he continued. “Victor told me months ago that if Silas refused to sign, I should provoke him publicly. Make him look unstable. Make Elena choose between us. I thought it was about pressure.”
Silas remembered the recording: Do not force the lock until the witnesses are present.
“They need witnesses for another reason,” Mara said. “If Silas appears violent or mentally unfit, they could challenge his authority as trustee.”
Adrian nodded. “And if Elena publicly supports me, Victor claims she acted voluntarily.”
Elena’s expression hardened. “So the wedding guests are evidence.”
“Yes.”
Silas looked at Adrian. “Were you going to hit me?”
Adrian did not answer immediately.
“I was told to,” he said.
“That wasn’t the question.”
“No,” Adrian said. “I didn’t think I could.”
Silas held his gaze. “Tomorrow we find out.”
The rehearsal dinner took place at the Grand Briar Hotel under heavy security disguised as event staff. Crystal chandeliers illuminated gilded ceilings and marble columns. Guests drank champagne while federal agents monitored service corridors.
Adrian’s family side was nearly empty. He claimed most relatives were dead or estranged. Three business associates attended, including a silver-haired woman named Celeste Vane, introduced as his former mentor.
Rook identified her within minutes.
Celeste Vane had served as legal counsel to Meridian Arc, Cross Atlantic Holdings, and four companies linked to Victor. She was the woman who would later carry the leather case into the ballroom.
She approached Silas during dinner.
“You must be proud,” she said.
“Of my daughter.”
“Of course.”
Her gaze dropped to his boots. “You wore those to a formal rehearsal?”
“They were formal cows.”
She smiled. “Victor said you used humor when threatened.”
Silas’s face remained still.
Celeste lifted her glass. “Old habits.”
“Where is he?”
“Closer than you think.”
“Where is Harlan?”
For the first time, her confidence shifted.
Silas saw it.
She recovered quickly. “You’ve been listening to old stories.”
“I’ve been reading old payments.”
Celeste leaned closer. “Rebecca was the clever one. You were only the wall she hid behind.”
Silas’s hand tightened around his glass.
Across the room, Elena watched.
Celeste continued, “Tomorrow, bring the original trust instruments and the coded pages. In return, you receive the names.”
“And Mara’s kidnapping? The fire? Mercer?”
“Victor’s methods have become emotional.”
“Not Harlan’s?”
Celeste’s eyes cooled. “Do not speak names you do not understand.”
She walked away.
Rook joined Silas. “Her pulse spiked when you mentioned Harlan.”
“He’s above Victor.”
“Or she fears him more.”
During dessert, the hotel lights flickered.
Only once.
Rook checked the electrical monitors. Someone had tested the blackout system.
At midnight, Elena stood alone on the ballroom balcony. Adrian joined her.
“You can still leave,” he said.
“So can you.”
“He will kill me.”
“He may kill you anyway.”
Adrian looked through the glass doors toward Silas. “Your father will never forgive me.”
“This is not about forgiveness.”
“What is it about?”
Elena turned to him. “Choice.”
He looked at her as though remembering the man he might have been.
“I did love you,” he said.
She fought tears. “Then choose something love would recognize.”
Adrian reached into his pocket and gave her a key.
“What does this open?”
“A safe in Suite 1708. Celeste thinks I don’t know it exists.”
“What’s inside?”
“Proof that Victor plans to kill everyone involved after the exchange.”
“Everyone?”
May you like
Adrian looked toward the ballroom.
“Including me.”
