Chapter 6 - The Daughter’s Secret Investigation

Elena returned to the ranch wearing her engagement ring.

She kissed Adrian in the courtyard, apologized for doubting him, and said Mara had confirmed the documents were planted.

Adrian’s relief was subtle but real.

Silas watched from the porch.

Something had changed in his daughter. She laughed at the right moments but not with her whole face. She allowed Adrian to touch her but positioned herself so she could see his hands. When he mentioned Meridian Arc, she asked innocent questions and remembered every answer.

Silas recognized the behavior because she had learned it from him.

He said nothing.

That evening, Elena entered the barn office and closed the door behind her.

“Did you forge those papers?” she asked.

“No.”

“Did you plant them?”

“No.”

“Did you know I found them?”

“Not until now.”

She studied him. “Mara told you?”

“No.”

“Then how did you know there were papers?”

Silas realized his mistake.

Elena’s eyes narrowed. “You have the guest house under surveillance.”

“I monitor exterior access.”

“You heard us.”

“I heard enough.”

She paced to the window. “You promised to trust me.”

“I promised not to oppose the wedding.”

“That is not the same thing.”

“No.”

Elena turned. “Lyle Mercer created the forgery. He’s dead.”

Silas’s expression changed.

“You didn’t know,” she said.

“No.”

“So Adrian may be connected to a man’s death.”

“Yes.”

“And you still plan to let the wedding happen.”

Silas closed the office blinds.

Then he told her almost everything.

Victor Cross. The transmission corridor. Meridian Arc. The false development option. The federal investigation. The ballroom diagram. The planned blackout.

Elena listened without interrupting.

When he finished, she looked older.

“You used me as bait.”

“I tried to keep you outside it.”

“You cannot keep the bride outside her own wedding.”

“I can keep my daughter alive.”

“By lying to her?”

“By giving them one thing they believe they can control.”

“Me.”

Silas had no defense that did not sound cruel.

Elena removed the ring and placed it on the desk.

For one terrible moment, Silas thought she would leave.

Instead, she said, “Put a tracker in it.”

He stared at her.

“Adrian takes it off my hand every night and puts it in the safe beside his bed. If that safe contains what we need, the ring can help locate it.”

“No.”

“Dad.”

“No.”

“You don’t get to decide this alone anymore.”

“He may be dangerous.”

“He is already in my house.”

Silas stood. “Then we remove him tonight.”

“And Victor disappears again. The corridor scheme moves to another company. Another family gets targeted. Another Lyle Mercer dies.”

Her voice shook, but she did not look away.

Silas saw her mother in that moment, not in her face but in her courage. Rebecca Vale had once stood between an injured horse and a wildfire because she refused to leave the animal chained.

“You knew I would say yes eventually,” Silas said.

“I hoped.”

“That’s manipulation.”

“I learned from experts.”

Against every instinct, Silas agreed.

Rook replaced the ring’s inner support with a micro-transmitter. Mara created a secure phone for Elena. Boone assigned two ranch hands to remain near her without appearing to guard her.

Elena began documenting Adrian’s calls.

Most were ordinary. Vendors, lawyers, wedding staff.

Then, five nights before the ceremony, Adrian took a call at 2:13 a.m. and walked beyond the guest house toward the orchard.

Elena followed at a distance.

The tracker in her ring showed his position. Rook and Silas listened from the security room.

Adrian spoke quietly.

“She found the documents, but she believed the setup.”

A distorted voice answered through the phone. “And the old man?”

“He wants me to think he’s weakening.”

“He is not weak.”

“No. He’s sentimental.”

“Sentimental men are predictable.”

Adrian looked toward the dark main house. “After the ceremony, I’ll force the signature in front of everyone. He won’t risk humiliating Elena.”

The voice replied, “Do not underestimate Silas Vale.”

“I won’t.”

“You already did once.”

Adrian stiffened. “That was handled.”

“What was handled?” Silas whispered.

Rook adjusted the receiver.

Adrian said, “Mercer panicked. I solved it.”

Elena stood behind an apple tree, one hand over her mouth.

The voice on the phone became clearer for a moment.

“Your mother panicked too.”

Adrian’s face changed.

“My mother was loyal.”

“Your mother tried to save you from me.”

The line went silent.

Then the voice said, “Do not make me regret letting you live.”

Adrian ended the call.

He stood in the orchard for several minutes, breathing hard.

Elena slipped away.

When she reached the stable, Silas was waiting.

She looked at him with tears in her eyes. “Victor is alive.”

Silas nodded.

“And Adrian is afraid of him.”

“Yes.”

“Does that make him a victim?”

Silas answered carefully. “A frightened man can still choose where he points the knife.”

May you like

Elena put the ring back on her finger.

“Then let’s find out where he points it.”
