THE SISTER THEY ERASED / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7 - The Groom Who Chose the Truth

Altair closed the private runway.

Security vehicles surrounded the hangars while air-traffic controllers attempted to contact Elena One.

The aircraft did not respond.

Julian joined the operations team in the control center. Claire stood beside him, watching the unidentified signal approach from the east.

“It could be Graham,” Naomi said.

“Then why use a call sign connected to Thomas?” Claire asked.

“To frighten you. Or to force the airport to accept his landing.”

The signal descended.

Controllers transmitted another warning.

“Elena One, Merritt Tower. Runway access is denied. Identify yourself and maintain holding altitude.”

Static answered.

Then a man’s voice spoke.

“Merritt Tower, Elena One. Priority contract seven. Medical emergency onboard.”

Julian reached for the microphone.

“Elena One, state the nature of the emergency.”

“Passenger unconscious. Fuel critical.”

Claire recognized the speaker.

“Graham.”

Julian looked at her.

“Are you certain?”

“Yes.”

Naomi contacted investigators, who positioned teams along the runway.

The fuel claim might be false, but aviation law and basic human safety limited their choices. Denying a truly endangered aircraft could kill innocent people.

Claire authorized an emergency landing.

The jet touched down hard, its wheels throwing smoke across the pavement. It rolled toward the far end of the runway and stopped between two security vehicles.

No one exited.

Investigators approached.

The cabin door opened.

Graham Hartley emerged with both hands raised.

Blood stained one sleeve, though the injury appeared minor. He shouted that a passenger needed help.

Medical teams entered the aircraft.

They found no unconscious passenger.

They found the missing leather case, dozens of corporate files, and a timed device designed to destroy the papers with fire after landing.

Graham was arrested before he reached the terminal.

Claire watched from behind the control-center glass.

“He came back to destroy evidence at Altair,” Naomi said.

Julian shook his head.

“No. He could have burned the documents anywhere.”

“Then why bring them here?”

Claire understood first.

“He wanted the trust contract recognized.”

Naomi looked at her.

“The priority landing record proves Elena One arrived at the airfield.”

“And Graham was the person operating under the call sign.”

“Meaning he may claim he represents the original beneficiary.”

Claire looked toward the runway.

“He is trying to create an ownership dispute.”

Graham had not returned because he was trapped.

He had returned because he still believed there was something to steal.

During interrogation, he refused to discuss the fraudulent loan, Thomas Mercer, or the blue ledger. He asked for a corporate attorney and claimed he had been protecting documents from Richard Hartley.

Then he made a formal request.

He wanted to see Claire.

Naomi advised against it.

Claire agreed.

They met through reinforced glass at the federal detention facility. Graham wore a plain gray uniform. Without tailored suits and family authority, he looked ordinary.

He smiled when Claire sat down.

“You finally became what Richard feared.”

“What was that?”

“Independent.”

Claire picked up the phone.

“You forged my identity.”

“I preserved an asset.”

“You declared me dead.”

“I declared Elena Mercer dead. Claire Hartley remained alive.”

“They are the same person.”

“Not legally.”

“Leon disagreed.”

Graham’s smile faded.

“Leon was sentimental.”

“He prevented you from taking the trust.”

“He delayed it.”

“What did Thomas Mercer discover?”

Graham leaned closer to the glass.

“Your mother has been talking.”

“She told me about the investigation.”

“Then she told you only enough to make herself innocent.”

“Was Thomas’s disappearance an accident?”

Graham studied her face.

“You look more like him every year.”

“Answer the question.”

“He was an idealist. Idealists believe documents can control powerful people.”

“Did Richard meet him before the flight?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To make an offer.”

“What offer?”

“Richard would raise you, protect Evelyn, and keep the Mercer affair private. In exchange, Thomas would transfer the airfield shares.”

“Thomas refused.”

“Completely.”

Claire tightened her grip on the phone.

“What happened next?”

Graham sat back.

“Ask Richard.”

“I am asking you.”

“I was not on the aircraft.”

“That is not the same as saying you were uninvolved.”

For the first time, anger flashed in Graham’s eyes.

“You think you built Altair alone. Every runway beneath your company exists because men like Thomas, Leon, Richard, and me made decisions before you could speak.”

“Then why are you behind glass while I own the company?”

His anger deepened.

“You own shares. You do not own the history beneath them.”

He placed his hand against the glass.

“The trust has a second condition Leon never told you.”

“What condition?”

“Elena Rose Mercer must prove Thomas’s death resulted from an accident.”

Claire stared at him.

“If it was not an accident?”

“The trust transfers to Thomas’s closest surviving legal relative.”

“Who is that?”

Graham smiled again.

“Not you.”

The phone disconnected automatically as the meeting time ended.

Before Claire left the facility, Naomi received an update regarding Richard’s statement.

He had admitted authorizing the employee fund transfer and allowing Graham to remove the ledger. He denied knowledge of Vanessa’s recent fraud.

He also denied involvement in Thomas Mercer’s disappearance.

But investigators had recovered an old calendar from Richard’s office.

On the night Thomas’s aircraft vanished, Richard had written one sentence beneath the flight number.

MERCER PROBLEM RESOLVED.

Claire returned to Altair after dark.

Julian waited beside Leon’s old aircraft, away from cameras and attorneys.

She told him about Graham’s claim and Richard’s calendar.

Julian listened without interrupting.

“What if my entire company is built on something taken from Thomas?” Claire asked.

“Then you investigate it.”

“What if the truth destroys Altair?”

“Then we rebuild honestly.”

She looked at him.

“You say that as though losing everything is simple.”

“It is not simple. It is simply better than becoming the people who hurt you.”

Claire lowered her head.

“I spent years proving I was not what they called me. Now I may have inherited the reason they erased me.”

Julian took her hand.

“You did not become worthy because Altair succeeded. You were worthy on the plastic chair at Gate 9.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

Julian touched his forehead to hers.

“We married yesterday. I did not promise to stay only while the company was easy.”

Naomi approached from the hangar entrance, holding a phone.

“I am sorry to interrupt.”

“What happened?” Claire asked.

“Adrian found another recording.”

“From Vanessa’s study?”

“No. From Richard’s office.”

Naomi played the audio.

Richard’s voice came first.

“If Claire claims the Mercer trust, she will ask about the flight.”

Then Evelyn answered.

“She deserves the truth.”

May you like

Richard’s reply was almost inaudible.

“If she learns Thomas survived, none of us will keep what we have.”
