Chapter 10 - The Name in the Black Envelope

Claire did not go alone.
She showed the note to Julian, Naomi, and the investigators handling Thomas’s case.
“If Thomas wrote it, he may be afraid,” Julian said.
“Or someone wants me to believe he wrote it.”
Naomi compared the handwriting with Thomas’s preserved flight records. An expert found strong similarities but could not confirm authenticity from one short note.
The key belonged to a private storage facility near the Spanish address.
Investigators proposed sending a local team first.
Claire agreed.
The address led to an abandoned coastal house overlooking the Bay of Biscay. No one had lived there officially for years, but recent food, medicine, and aircraft maps were found inside.
On the kitchen wall hung photographs of Claire.
Some came from business magazines. Others were personal.
Claire leaving Leon’s memorial.
Claire and Julian walking after their wedding.
Claire outside the courthouse after Richard’s sentencing.
Someone had been watching her.
The investigators found no sign of Thomas.
In the storage unit, the key opened a steel case containing old flight logs, medical records, and cassette tapes labeled with dates from the year Claire was born.
The final item was a sealed DNA report.
Claire opened it inside Altair’s legal office.
The report compared Thomas Mercer’s preserved medical sample with genetic material taken from a newborn identified as Elena Rose Mercer.
Probability of paternity exceeded 99 percent.
Thomas was Claire’s biological father.
But Naomi pointed to a second comparison.
The newborn sample had also been compared with Evelyn Hartley.
Probability of maternity was zero.
Claire read the result again.
“There must be an error.”
Naomi’s face was pale.
“The laboratory repeated the test three times.”
Julian moved closer.
“Then who gave birth to Claire?”
Evelyn appeared in the hospital photograph holding the newborn. The original records listed her as the mother. Every family document supported the same story.
Yet the DNA report said the child in the Mercer trust was not Evelyn’s biological daughter.
Claire called Evelyn and asked her to come to Altair.
When Evelyn arrived, Claire placed the report in front of her.
Evelyn read it.
Her hands began shaking before she reached the final line.
“Where did you get this?”
“Thomas’s storage case.”
“You found him?”
“No.”
Evelyn pushed the report away.
“The sample must be wrong.”
“Who was my biological mother?”
“You are my daughter.”
“That is not what I asked.”
Evelyn stood.
“I raised you.”
“You erased me.”
The words stopped her.
Claire continued.
“For six years, you allowed people to believe I was a thief. For twenty-eight years, you allowed Thomas to believe I was dead. Do not ask me to accept another partial truth.”
Evelyn looked toward Julian and Naomi.
“This is private.”
Claire remained seated.
“They stay.”
“Claire, please.”
“Who gave birth to me?”
Evelyn’s composure collapsed.
She returned to the chair and covered her face.
“Her name was Amelia.”
“Amelia what?”
“Amelia Mercer.”
Naomi leaned forward.
“Thomas’s wife?”
Evelyn nodded.
Claire felt the air leave her lungs.
Thomas had been married, but Evelyn had not been carrying his child.
Amelia had.
“Why were you in the hospital photograph?” Claire asked.
“Because Amelia disappeared the night you were born.”
“Disappeared?”
“She left the maternity wing during a power failure. Thomas was away on a flight. The staff found you alone.”
“And you took me?”
“No.”
“Then explain.”
Evelyn began speaking rapidly, as if speed could reduce the weight of the confession.
“Richard and I were at the hospital because I had suffered a miscarriage. Graham was handling legal work for Thomas. He said Amelia had abandoned you and that Thomas could not return for several days. He said the baby needed temporary care.”
“You registered me as your own.”
“Richard said it would protect you until Thomas returned.”
“But Thomas did return.”
“Yes.”
“And you did not give me back.”
Evelyn looked down.
“I had lost my baby. I held you, and I could not bear to lose another.”
Claire’s voice became barely audible.
“So you stole me.”
“I loved you.”
“You stole me.”
“Richard promised Thomas would agree after he understood.”
“Did he?”
“No.”
Naomi asked the next question.
“What happened to Amelia?”
“I do not know.”
“You said she disappeared during a power failure.”
“That is what Graham told us.”
“Did you ever verify it?”
Evelyn shook her head.
Claire stood and walked toward the window, struggling to remain steady.
Every version of her childhood had been constructed by someone else.
Claire Hartley.
Elena Mercer.
Richard’s daughter.
Evelyn’s daughter.
The family criminal.
The aviation heiress.
Now even the identity of the woman who gave birth to her had been hidden.
Julian came beside her without touching her until she reached for his hand.
Naomi asked Evelyn, “Why did Thomas’s trust identify Elena as his child if Amelia was missing?”
“Thomas created the trust before the flight. He knew Claire was his daughter.”
“Then why was Claire raised as a Hartley?”
“Because Richard refused to surrender her.”
Claire turned from the window.
“And Thomas’s aircraft disappeared three days after he confronted Richard.”
Evelyn began crying.
“I did not know Richard would meet him.”
“You knew enough to remain silent afterward.”
“I was afraid he would take you.”
“He was my father.”
“I was your mother.”
“No,” Claire said. “You were the woman who raised me. What that means from now on depends on what you do next.”
Evelyn looked devastated.
“What do you want me to do?”
“Tell investigators everything. Every conversation. Every payment. Every document. Even if it adds charges against Richard. Even if it adds charges against you.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Then she nodded.
“I will.”
It was not a reunion.
But it was the first choice Evelyn made that did not require Claire to carry the cost.
The investigation reopened Thomas’s disappearance and Amelia Mercer’s missing-person case. Richard was questioned again. Graham refused to answer until prosecutors showed him the DNA report.
Then he requested a deal.
He admitted helping Richard alter Claire’s birth registration. He admitted arranging payments to the medical facility that held Thomas.
He denied harming Amelia.
According to Graham, Amelia had discovered that several Merritt Airfield investors were laundering money through aircraft leasing companies. She planned to give the evidence to federal authorities after Claire’s birth.
Graham claimed Amelia left the hospital voluntarily to protect her baby.
He also claimed she was alive.
“Where is she?” Claire demanded during a recorded interview.
Graham smiled behind the detention glass.
“Ask Thomas.”
“Thomas is missing.”
“No. Thomas is waiting.”
“For what?”
“For you to remember.”
“I was a newborn.”
“Memory is not always stored in the mind.”
Claire stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
Graham leaned closer.
“Amelia left something inside the yellow blanket.”
The blanket from the hospital photograph had been preserved in Evelyn’s old family storage. Investigators recovered it from a sealed container after the mansion sale.
At first, it appeared ordinary.
Then a textile specialist discovered a narrow strip of magnetic material sewn into the hem.
Inside was a miniature data reel designed for an aviation recorder.
Altair engineers restored part of the audio.
A woman’s voice spoke through static.
“My name is Amelia Mercer. If Thomas does not receive this, the Hartleys have already moved against us.”
Claire gripped Julian’s hand as the recording continued.
“The ownership records are hidden where Elena’s name first appeared. Richard is not working alone. Someone inside the Mercer family arranged the transfer.”
A loud noise interrupted the message.
Amelia began speaking faster.
“If anything happens to me, do not let them raise my daughter as one of theirs.”
The recording ended.
Naomi searched the original trust archive for the first appearance of Elena’s name.
It was not the birth certificate.
It was a handwritten passenger manifest created six months before Claire was born.
The manifest listed Thomas Mercer, Amelia Mercer, and Elena Mercer on a private flight to Switzerland.
Claire had not yet been born.
“How could Elena’s name appear before my birth?” Claire asked.
Naomi examined the document.
“Perhaps they had already chosen the name.”
Julian pointed to the passenger ages.
Thomas was thirty-four.
Amelia was thirty-one.
Elena was listed as nineteen.
Claire stared at the page.
“Elena was not originally me.”
Naomi’s phone rang.
She answered, listened, and put the call on speaker.
An Altair security officer spoke.
“We have an unidentified aircraft approaching the private runway. The pilot is requesting emergency priority access.”
Claire looked toward the control-center windows.
“What call sign?”
There was a pause.
“Elena One.”
Julian moved toward the radar display.
“Did the pilot identify themselves?”
“No, but there is a passenger asking to speak with Claire.”
“Put them through.”
Static filled the room.
Then a woman’s voice came over the radio.
It was calm, older, and unfamiliar.
“Claire Hartley, my name is Elena Mercer.”
Claire stopped breathing.
The woman continued.
“Thomas told me you found the blanket.”
“Who are you?” Claire asked.
“I am your sister.”
Every person in the control center went silent.
Claire looked at the manifest again.
Elena Mercer, age nineteen.
The woman’s voice returned through the static.
“Do not allow Evelyn Hartley near the runway. She did not steal one Mercer daughter.”
May you like
A shadow appeared beyond the clouds as the approaching aircraft descended.
“She stole two.”
