THE SISTER THEY ERASED / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3 - The Signature Beneath the Champagne

Adrian arrived at Altair headquarters after midnight.

He looked like a man who had aged several years during the drive.

Claire met him in a glass conference room overlooking the runway. Naomi sat beside her with a recorder, two legal pads, and a sealed evidence case.

Adrian placed a memory card on the table.

“I installed the camera,” he said.

Naomi did not touch it.

“Why?”

“Vanessa told me someone had been entering her study. She asked me to help her catch a housekeeper she suspected of stealing.”

“And what did you record?”

Adrian looked at Claire.

“Vanessa entering my father’s investment portal while I was asleep.”

Claire felt no satisfaction.

She had met Adrian only twice before his relationship with Vanessa began. He was careful, courteous, and almost painfully sincere. Vanessa had displayed their engagement online like a corporate acquisition, but Adrian had seemed genuinely devoted to her.

“How long were you engaged?” Claire asked.

“Eight months.”

“And you never questioned why she needed your passwords?”

“She said she was planning our financial future.”

Naomi slid a consent form across the table.

“We need written authorization to review the recording.”

Adrian signed.

The footage showed Vanessa sitting at her desk at 1:08 in the morning. She placed Adrian’s phone beside the keyboard, used his fingerprint while he slept nearby, and accessed a protected account.

Then Graham entered the room.

Claire leaned closer to the screen.

Graham was older than she remembered. His shoulders had narrowed, and gray had spread through his hair, but his voice remained calm and confident.

“The marriage license creates the timeline,” he told Vanessa. “Once the marital trust is active, we move the voting rights before Adrian understands what happened.”

“What if Claire’s audit team notices the loan?”

“They won’t. Altair has thousands of guarantees.”

Vanessa poured champagne.

“She noticed the benefit transfer six years ago.”

“And your father handled her.”

“He almost changed his mind.”

“He did not.”

Vanessa smiled.

“Because he knew which daughter the company needed.”

Claire paused the recording.

For a moment, the conference room disappeared.

She was back at the family dining table, listening to Richard tell her that Vanessa understood loyalty while Claire understood only suspicion.

Claire had spent years wondering what evidence Vanessa had invented.

Now she knew the truth was simpler.

Vanessa had counted on Richard choosing the version of events that protected the company and the daughter he preferred.

Naomi resumed the video.

Graham opened a folder containing the draft marital trust. The document granted Vanessa temporary voting authority over Adrian’s Cole Continental shares if he became “medically or legally unavailable.”

The language looked harmless until Naomi enlarged an attached definition.

Legal unavailability included any internal investigation initiated by a spouse or related company.

Vanessa planned to trigger an investigation immediately after the wedding, suspend Adrian’s voting authority, and transfer his influence to a corporate partnership controlled by Graham.

Adrian’s face turned pale.

“She was going to accuse me of misconduct?”

“Only long enough to take control,” Naomi said.

Claire watched Vanessa lift her champagne glass.

“To the wedding,” Vanessa said on the recording.

Graham touched his glass to hers.

“And to Claire’s signature paying for it.”

Adrian stood and walked to the window.

“I loved her.”

Claire did not tell him he had loved a performance. She knew how humiliating it felt when others treated trust as stupidity.

“You believed the person she chose to show you,” Claire said. “That is not the same as choosing to be deceived.”

He looked at her reflection in the glass.

“Did you know about the marital trust before tonight?”

“We found the unsigned draft.”

“And you were going to tell me?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“After Naomi confirmed it was real.”

Adrian gave a bitter laugh.

“My fiancée planned to steal my company, and the sister she called a criminal was the person protecting me.”

Naomi removed the memory card and placed it inside the evidence case.

“We should contact federal investigators.”

Adrian nodded.

“What about the wedding?”

Claire understood which wedding he meant.

“Do not confront Vanessa tonight. She may destroy evidence.”

“I cannot stand beside her and pretend.”

“You do not need to. Tell her you have an emergency. Come to my wedding tomorrow. Naomi will arrange your interview with investigators.”

Adrian looked uncertain.

“Your wedding is not the place for my disaster.”

“My wedding is at an aviation headquarters surrounded by lawyers, regulators, and security officers. It may be the safest place available.”

A reluctant smile touched his face.

“Vanessa said you were dramatic.”

“Vanessa rented a cathedral and ordered seven thousand imported roses.”

“That is fair.”

After Adrian left with Naomi, Claire remained in the conference room.

Julian found her there at two in the morning.

He wore an old flight jacket and carried two cups of tea. He placed one in front of her, then sat without asking questions.

They had met during an Altair safety review three years earlier. Julian was an aerospace engineer who had become an accident-prevention consultant after losing a close friend in a preventable runway incident.

He did not rescue Claire.

He did something more important.

He believed her before she had proved herself useful to him.

“You watched the recording,” he said.

Claire nodded.

“And?”

“My father knew enough to doubt them.”

Julian waited.

“He still chose them.”

“What do you need from me?”

Claire stared at the dark runway.

“I need tomorrow to remain ours.”

“It will.”

“Even if investigators arrive?”

“We invited Naomi. That was always a possibility.”

“Even if my family appears?”

Julian considered the question.

“Do you want them there?”

“No.”

“Then they will not enter.”

Claire looked at him.

“Does that make me cruel?”

“No. Boundaries feel cruel only to people who benefited from your lack of them.”

She rested her head against his shoulder.

At dawn, wedding preparations began around the main hangar. Employees arranged chairs. Pilots repositioned aircraft. White flowers appeared along the glass walls.

Claire changed into her wedding dress inside Leon’s former office.

Before the ceremony, Naomi delivered an update.

The bank had frozen Hartley assets.

Investigators were preparing warrants.

Altair’s board had unanimously approved immediate contract suspensions.

Claire signed the final document.

Her hand did not shake.

At 2:00 in the afternoon, she walked beside Julian across the runway.

At 2:06, the national business network identified her as Altair’s owner.

At 2:09, Adrian appeared on camera.

At 2:10, the Hartley mansion lost power.

At 2:14, security reported a black vehicle racing toward Altair’s private gate.

The driver ignored the first stop signal.

The vehicle struck the barrier and came to a halt.

Vanessa stepped out in her silver dress.

In one hand she carried her wedding contract.

In the other, she held the missing blue ledger.
