Chapter 8 - The Words He Could Not Take Back

The conversation began politely.
Jessica praised the dinner. Brandon spoke about repayment schedules. Linda listened without agreeing.
Then she asked Brandon to explain why her signature appeared on documents she had never approved.
He denied it.
She asked about the false invoices.
He blamed an assistant.
She asked why Jessica’s entity would gain control if the project failed.
Jessica called it a standard protection.
Each answer contradicted the one before it.
Finally, Linda pushed the unsigned transfer agreement toward Brandon.
“Tell me the truth, and I will consider helping you close the company without hurting your employees.”
It was a limited offer, carefully discussed with Evelyn. Linda would not cover his debts, but she was willing to support an orderly shutdown that protected innocent workers.
Brandon heard only refusal.
“You have more than enough,” he snapped. “Dad left you everything.”
“Your father left me security.”
“He built all of it for the family.”
“And you are trying to gamble it away.”
Jessica touched Brandon’s arm, but he pulled free.
“Sign the house over, Mom. It’s my future.”
“This house is not collateral for another mistake.”
His face hardened.
“Sometimes I wish I could choose a different mother.”
The sentence struck the place where Linda had stored every excuse for him.
She folded the napkin.
When she answered, her voice did not shake.
“Then you can choose a different person to rescue you.”

After that, the doorbell rang.
And the future Brandon had tried to force from her began closing around him.
