Chapter 7 - The Dinner Trap

Evelyn advised Linda to arrange one final meeting.

The purpose was not revenge. It was clarity.

Linda invited Brandon and Jessica to dinner on Thursday. She told them she was ready to discuss the transfer. Brandon sounded relieved. Jessica sounded triumphant.

Before they arrived, Linda placed a small audio recorder in the sideboard drawer. Evelyn confirmed that the setup complied with the legal strategy they had chosen and that formal evidence would come primarily from bank records and documents.

Mr. Alvarez prepared a timeline of altered invoices. The bank representative confirmed that the transfer could be stopped. Evelyn drafted notices removing Brandon’s authority from every family account.

Linda also changed the locks on the study where Thomas’s records were kept.

At five-thirty, she stood alone in the dining room.

The table looked almost exactly as it had on Sunday. White flowers. Silverware. Wine glasses. The same cream envelope.

She felt Thomas everywhere.

For years, she had believed being a good mother meant staying between Brandon and every hard landing.

Now she understood what Thomas had tried to tell her.

A landing was not always destruction.

Sometimes it was the only moment a person finally felt the ground.

At six, the bell rang.

Brandon entered first. Jessica followed, carrying her black phone.

They smiled at the envelope.

Neither noticed that Linda had not set a place for herself.
