Chapter 3 - Jessica’s Perfect Smile

Jessica Hale understood weakness better than anyone Linda had ever met.
She never asked for money directly. She spoke about opportunity, timing, and legacy. She praised Linda’s taste, Linda’s intelligence, and the beautiful home Thomas had chosen for her.
But her compliments always circled back to value.
“This neighborhood is practically recession-proof,” Jessica once said while looking through the bay windows.
Another time, she asked whether the property was held in a trust.
Linda remembered the question after the transfer documents appeared.
That evening, she searched Jessica’s name online and found polished photographs, charity events, and a consulting company with a vague description. Nothing looked alarming.
Then Linda searched court records.
Two former business partners had sued Jessica over unpaid obligations. Both cases had settled. A third company connected to her had dissolved after creditors filed claims.
Linda printed everything.
The next morning, she called Mr. Alvarez.
He had managed the Mercer family accounts for nearly twenty years. When Linda described the property transfer, he became silent.
“Do not sign anything,” he said.
“I wasn’t planning to.”
“Linda, there is something else.”
He explained that Brandon’s company had submitted invoices to the family investment office requesting reimbursement for construction expenses. Several invoices appeared altered. One listed a contractor that had stopped operating two years earlier.
Linda felt the room tilt.
“How much?”
“Nearly four hundred thousand dollars.”
She gripped the edge of her desk.
Mr. Alvarez continued carefully. “There is also a document carrying what appears to be your approval.”
Linda had never seen it.
For the first time, fear pushed past heartbreak.
