Chapter 7: The Screen Went Dark
Every face in the auditorium turned toward Lily.
Principal Whitmore gripped the podium.
“Lily, sit down.”
But Lily stepped into the center aisle.
Her voice trembled, but she did not stop.
“I have one question for the school board. Is this scholarship for students who earned it, or for families who can buy it?”
The whispers grew louder.
Cassandra stood.
“This girl is creating a scene.”
Lily looked straight at her.
“No. I’m doing what my mother did. I’m telling the truth.”
Before Principal Whitmore could speak again, the auditorium lights suddenly went out.
A second later, the large screen behind the stage turned on.
A video began playing.
Cassandra appeared on screen inside the scholarship storage room. Beside her stood the finance board member from Rose’s files. Cassandra handed him an envelope.
Her voice came through the speakers clearly.
“Remove Lily Parker. A cleaner’s daughter cannot be the face of this school.”
The auditorium exploded.
Cassandra’s face turned pale.
“Turn it off!” she shouted. “Turn it off now!”
But the video continued.
Rose appeared in the next clip, standing in the hallway with her phone in her hand.
“You stole from children who had nothing,” Rose said. “I have proof.”
Then Daniel Cross appeared in a recorded message.
He explained that if the video was being shown, it meant he and Rose had not been able to release the story safely. He said all evidence had already been sent to the police, the press, and the state education department.
Lily could hardly breathe.
Then the screen changed again.
Rose appeared.
She was sitting in a plain room. Her face looked thinner. Her hair was shorter. But her eyes were the same.
“Lily,” Rose said on the screen, “if you are watching this, I need you to know I am alive.”
Lily sobbed.
At that exact moment, the auditorium doors opened.
Everyone turned.
Detective Mason stood in the doorway.
Beside him was Rose Parker.
Alive.
Tired.
But real.
Lily ran down the aisle.
“Mom!”
Rose ran too.
They met in the middle of the auditorium and held each other as the entire school watched in silence.
Rose whispered again and again, “I’m sorry, my baby. I’m so sorry.”
Lily shook her head through tears.
“I knew you didn’t leave me.”
On the stage, Cassandra tried to walk away, but two officers blocked her path.
Detective Mason stepped forward.
“Cassandra Sterling, you are under arrest pending investigation for embezzlement, witness intimidation, and obstruction.”
For the first time in her life, Cassandra Sterling had no speech prepared.
No smile.
