Chapter 4: The Tin Box Under the Sink
The police reopened Rose Parker’s case that same afternoon.
Detective Mason, who had handled the original report, returned to the school with a sharper look in his eyes. This time, he listened carefully to the recording from Lily’s badge.
Ava was questioned first.
At first, she tried to deny everything. But without her friends around her, without laughter or power, she looked smaller than Lily had ever seen her.
Finally, Ava admitted she had overheard adults talking.
A fundraiser.
A storage room.
A missing envelope.
A woman who had seen something she should not have seen.
Detective Mason asked Lily if her mother had ever kept work papers at home.
At first, Lily shook her head.
Then she remembered a small metal box under the kitchen sink.
Rose had kept it locked for years.
That evening, Detective Mason, Ms. Harper, and Lily went to the apartment. Lily found the key hidden inside her mother’s sewing kit.
The box opened with a tiny click.
Inside were no jewels, no money, no family treasures.
Only a notebook, an old employee card, a small phone, and a flash drive.
The notebook was filled with Rose’s handwriting.
She had written about late-night meetings. Changed scholarship lists. Donations that never reached the students. Qualified applicants removed without explanation.
Lily’s name appeared twice.
The first time, beside the words:
“Strong candidate.”
The second time, beside something that made Lily’s stomach twist.
“To be removed.”
Detective Mason opened the flash drive on a secure laptop.
There were photos of documents, bank records, and short video clips.
One clip showed Cassandra Sterling handing an envelope to a man from the finance board.
Another showed Rose hiding in a hallway, filming with shaking hands.
Then came an audio file.
Rose’s voice played from the speaker.
She sounded scared, but brave.
She told Cassandra she knew about the stolen scholarship money. She said she had proof. She said she would not let poor students lose their future because rich parents wanted more power.
Then Cassandra’s voice answered coldly.
“Who will believe a cleaner over people like us?”
