The moment the carton of milk spilled over Lily Parker’s head, the entire cafeteria froze.

Cold white drops slid down her hair, soaked into the collar of her faded school uniform, and fell onto the cheap lunch tray in front of her. Around her, students gasped. Then, one by one, they started laughing.

Phones came up. Whispers spread. Some students looked away, pretending they had not seen anything. Others leaned closer, hungry for the next scene.

Standing in front of Lily was Ava Sterling, the most powerful girl at Hawthorne Academy. Her mother was the president of the parent board. Her family donated money to the school every year. Teachers smiled when Ava walked past. Students followed her like she was royalty.

Ava tilted her head and smiled cruelly.

“Look at her,” she said loudly. “The janitor’s daughter still thinks she belongs with scholarship students.”

Lily’s hands tightened under the table.

The laughter stopped.
