Chapter 8 - The Person Paying the Bills

Rachel spent the entire night searching public records.

The name Evelyn Carter appeared nowhere.

But there was a recurring payment.

Every month.

For eight years.

A private medical facility.

Rachel called.

The receptionist refused to give information.

Rachel tried again the next morning.

This time, someone answered.

"Can I help you?"

"I'm looking for Evelyn Carter."

Silence.

Rachel knew immediately.

"She's there."

The person on the phone hesitated.

"I can't confirm that."

"Please."

"Who are you?"

"Her daughter."

Another silence.

Then the receptionist said, "You shouldn't come here."

Rachel's heart pounded.

"Why?"

"Because if Margaret finds out..."

Rachel froze.

"You know Margaret?"

The line went dead.

Rachel immediately drove to the facility.

It was located outside the city.

A quiet building surrounded by trees.

Rachel walked inside.

A nurse approached.

"Can I help you?"

"I'm looking for Evelyn Carter."

The nurse's face changed.

"You need to leave."

"I know she's here."

The nurse looked toward the hallway.

Then whispered.

"Room 22."

Rachel followed the signs.

Her hand trembled as she reached the door.

She knocked.

No answer.

She opened it.

A woman sat beside the window.

Older.

Thin.

Gray hair.

Rachel stopped.

The woman slowly turned.

Their eyes met.

Neither spoke.

Rachel whispered.

"Mom?"

The woman began to cry.

Rachel stood frozen.

She had imagined this moment a thousand ways.

Anger.

Questions.

Reunion.

But she had never imagined silence.

Evelyn stood slowly.

"You look like your father."

Rachel's voice broke.

"You knew where I was."

Evelyn nodded.

"All these years."

"Yes."

"Why didn't you come?"

Evelyn looked toward the window.

"Because I was afraid."

"Of Margaret?"

"Of what she would do if she knew I was still alive."

Rachel stepped closer.

"What happened?"

Evelyn reached for her hand.

"I tried to protect you."

Rachel pulled away.

"Everyone says that."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"I know."

Rachel showed her the photograph of the red chair.

Evelyn's expression changed.

"Where did you get that?"

"At home."

"You found the key."

Rachel nodded.

Evelyn looked terrified.

"Then she knows."

"Who?"

"Margaret."

Rachel felt cold.

"Knows what?"

Evelyn whispered.

"That the documents still exist."

"What documents?"

Evelyn looked at the door.

Then back at Rachel.

"The ones proving what happened to your father."

Rachel's heart stopped.

"You said he was involved."

"He was."

"Then why did you say he tried to protect me?"

"Because he changed his mind."

Rachel stared.

"What happened?"

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

"He was going to expose Margaret."

"And then?"

"He disappeared."

Rachel swallowed.

"He died."

Evelyn nodded.

"That's what they wanted you to believe."

Rachel stepped backward.

"What are you saying?"

Evelyn reached for her.

"Rachel, your father did die."

Rachel's heart sank.

"But not the way they told you."

Before Rachel could ask another question, the lights went out.

A door slammed somewhere down the hallway.

May you like

Evelyn whispered.

"She's here."
