Chapter 1 - The Morning Everything Broke

Rachel Carter had spent years believing that family arguments were temporary.
People said things when they were angry.
People misunderstood each other.
People apologized.
That was what families did.
At least, that was what Rachel had told herself.
She had repeated it after every disagreement with Vanessa.
She had repeated it whenever Margaret criticized her parenting.
She had repeated it when Lily began avoiding her at family gatherings.
And she had repeated it that morning, right up until she opened the kitchen door and saw Emma crying on the floor.
The image would stay with her forever.
Emma's little stuffed giraffe lay beside her.
The metal skillet rested several feet away.
Vanessa stood near the stove.
Lily sat frozen at the table.
Margaret stood in the doorway.
Nobody moved.
Rachel dropped to her knees.
"What happened to my daughter?"
Emma reached for her.
"Mommy."
Rachel pulled her close.
"I'm here. I'm here."
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"She shouldn't have been there."
Rachel looked up.
"What?"
Vanessa pointed toward the chair where Lily was sitting.
"She took Lily's seat."
Rachel stared at her.
"She's four."
"I know how old she is."
"Then why are you talking about a chair?"
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"Because nobody listens until something happens."
Margaret stepped forward.
"Rachel, take Emma somewhere quiet."
Rachel looked at her mother.
"Something happened to my child, and you want me to be quiet?"
"This is not helping."
"Then tell me what happened."
Nobody answered.
Rachel looked at Lily.
The seven-year-old had lowered her eyes.
Rachel noticed something.
Lily was gripping the edge of the table so tightly that her knuckles had gone pale.
"Lily?"
The girl looked up.
Rachel softened her voice.
"Did you see what happened?"
Lily opened her mouth.
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
"She's upset."
Rachel looked at Vanessa.
"I wasn't asking you."
Lily's eyes filled with tears.
Then she whispered, "Grandma said..."
Margaret's voice snapped across the kitchen.
"Lily."
The little girl went silent.
Rachel felt a chill run through her.
"Grandma said what?"
Margaret shook her head.
"She's confused."
Rachel stood slowly, keeping Emma against her chest.
"Everybody keeps telling me what my daughter and my niece are allowed to say."
Vanessa stepped forward.
"You're making this dramatic."
Rachel's eyes hardened.
"My daughter is hurt."
"And she isn't dying."
Rachel froze.
Vanessa immediately realized she had said too much.
Margaret glared at her.
Rachel looked from one woman to the other.
"How did you know what I was thinking?"
Vanessa said nothing.
Rachel picked up her phone.
"I'm calling for help."
Margaret grabbed her wrist.
"Rachel."
Rachel pulled away.
"Don't touch me."
The room fell silent.
Rachel carried Emma outside.
As she buckled her daughter into the car, Emma reached for her hand.
"Mommy?"
"I'm here."
"Don't go back."
Rachel stopped.
"What?"
Emma looked toward the house.
"Grandma gets mad when we tell."
Rachel's heart sank.
"Tell what?"
Emma closed her eyes.
"I don't know."
Before Rachel could ask another question, her phone began vibrating.
One message.
Then another.
Then another.
All from family members.
Rachel stared at the screen.
The first message was from Margaret.
Stop making this bigger than it is.
The second came from Vanessa.
You have no idea what you're accusing us of.
The third was from an unknown number.
Ask Lily what happened last Tuesday.
Rachel stared at it.
Last Tuesday.
What had happened last Tuesday?
She looked back toward the house.
Margaret was standing at the window.
Watching her.
May you like
Rachel started the car.
And for the first time in her life, she drove away from her family's house without looking back.
